On <\/span>August 22nd, 2025,<\/b> Air Mauritius\u2019 new ATR 72-600 landed at Plaisance Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport,<\/b> located in the <\/span>capital of Mauritius,<\/b> from <\/span>Toulouse on a long delivery flight<\/b>. Although it had arrived from the French city, where new ATR 72s are usually delivered from the factory, the <\/span>nine-year-old aircraft had been parked at Toulouse Francazal Airport since October 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n

This <\/span>ATR 72-600, with serial number 1316, was manufactured in Toulouse and made its maiden flight on April 4th, 2016.<\/b> During May of that year, the aircraft served as an ATR 72 demonstrator, being part of the exhibition tour across the United States and Canada called <\/span>\u201c#ATR4US.\u201d<\/b> It visited Toronto, Chicago, White Plains, Hyannis, Washington D.C., Charlotte, Dallas, Seattle, and Cincinnati.<\/span><\/p>\n

After returning to <\/span>Europe in mid-May,<\/b> the <\/span>ATR began preparations to join TAP Express,<\/b> the regional and domestic subsidiary of TAP Air Portugal, based at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon. In <\/span>July 2016, it was re-registered as CS-DJG and operated with the Portuguese airline until October 2022.<\/b> Due to the pandemic, between <\/span>March 2020 <\/b>and <\/span>November 2021, <\/b>it remained grounded at Cascais, a Portuguese airport located west of Lisbon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Estonian airline, based in Tallinn,<\/b> added this <\/span>ATR 72-600 to its fleet in March 2023.<\/b> It kept the same seating configuration <\/span>(70 seats in single class)<\/b> and received the registration <\/span>ES-ATK.<\/b><\/p>\n

In <\/span>September 2015,<\/b> following the liquidation of the national airline Estonian Air, the Estonian government decided to launch a new flag carrier. Six months later, in<\/span> March 2016,<\/b> the name of the new airline, <\/span>Nordica<\/b>, was announced, even though it had already commenced operations in <\/span>November 2015<\/b> through BMI Regional, a wet-lease partner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly before the restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in early 2020, <\/b>the <\/span>Nordica brand was renamed Xfly<\/b>, with the aim of further expanding its operations by adding new <\/span>ATR 72, Embraer 190, and Embraer 195<\/b> aircraft to its fleet. In <\/span>2021,<\/b> as a result of the low flight demand caused by the pandemic, Xfly decided to focus on ACMI contracts with other airlines to ensure the continuation of its services.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aircraft was operated by Xfly for TAP with the TAP Air Portugal\u2019s livery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Xfly,<\/b> formerly Nordica, <\/span>had signed a contract with Scandinavian Airlines,<\/b> which it had maintained since <\/span>2017<\/b>. <\/span>SAS announced the termination of the contract in November 2024 <\/b>due to <\/span>Xfly\u2019s difficult financial situation,<\/b> as <\/span>SAS argued that it risked the continuation of the operation because of Xfly\u2019s potential collapse.<\/b><\/p>\n

The cancellation of this contract resulted in the demise of Xfly, as it lost approximately <\/span>90% of its revenue.<\/b> Xfly filed for bankruptcy and began its liquidation process on <\/span>November 20th, 2024,<\/b> and was officially declared bankrupt on <\/span>January 28th, 2025.<\/b><\/p>\n

With regard to the ATR in question, <\/span>TAP had signed an ACMI contract with Xfly between 2022 and 2023,<\/b> this aircraft being one of three ATR 72s that were part of the operation. After the agreement ended, <\/span>Xfly withdrew the ATR 72 with serial number 1316 from service,<\/b> and it was preserved in <\/span>Toulouse Francazal between October 31st, 2023, and June 5th, 2025.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

As you can see in our database, on <\/span>June 5th, 2025,<\/b> and <\/span>August 9th, 2025,<\/b> it made two test flights in France, the last one <\/span>11 days<\/b> before departing for Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 07:45 local time on <\/span>August 20th, 2025<\/b>, <\/span>Air Mauritius\u2019 second ATR 72-600, registry 3B-NCU,<\/b> took off from <\/span>Francazal Airport bound for Athens,<\/b> beginning its <\/span>delivery flight to Mauritius.<\/b> It arrived in the Greek capital at 12:52 local time, after a<\/span> 4-hour and 7-minute flight.<\/b><\/p>\n

Just over two hours later, at 15:13 local time, the <\/span>ATR 72 departed Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport to Luxor, Egypt,<\/b> where it landed at 18:42 local time. <\/span>Three hours and 28 minutes <\/b>lasted the flight,<\/span> covering nearly 1,600 kilometers.<\/b><\/p>\n

The next day, this aircraft took off from <\/span>LXR at 09:42 local time towards Jeddah,<\/b> which was the<\/span> shortest leg of the long delivery flight. <\/b>On the afternoon of <\/span>August 21st,<\/b> after a two-hour stopover at<\/span> King Abdulaziz International Airport,<\/b> it departed for <\/span>Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.<\/b><\/p>\n

Jeddah-Nairobi and Nairobi-Port Louis,<\/b> the last two legs of the delivery flight, were the longest, lasting almost <\/span>six hours and around seven hours,<\/b> respectively. According to our database, <\/span>Jeddah-Nairobi was 2,556 kilometers,<\/b> while <\/span>Nairobi-Port Louis exceeded 3,000 kilometers,<\/b> or about <\/span>1,900 miles.<\/b><\/p>\n

The final leg was performed on <\/span>August 22nd,<\/b> landing at <\/span>Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport,<\/b> the most important airport in <\/span>Mauritius<\/b>, at 19:37 local time, coming from <\/span>Toulouse Francazal via Athens, Luxor, Jeddah, and Nairobi.<\/b> This <\/span>delivery flight lasted almost three days, covered more than 10,000 kilometers, and involved around 22 hours of flight time.<\/b><\/p>\n

Port Louis \u2013 Rodrigues Island is the only regular domestic route in Mauritius,<\/b> operated solely by <\/span>Air Mauritius with ATR 72-500 and ATR 72-600 aircraft.<\/b> The distance between the two islands is <\/span>600 kilometers,<\/b> offering around <\/span>five daily flights on the ATRs, <\/b>which results in more than <\/span>2,500 seats per week provided on each leg.<\/b><\/p>\n

Air Mauritius is the main and practically only operator on Rodrigues Island<\/b>.
