Building on the success of the 707, the <\/span>Boeing 727 entered commercial service on February 1st, 1964 with Eastern Air Lines. <\/b>Nearly <\/span>1,900 units were produced between 1963 and 1984, <\/b>when it was <\/span>replaced by newer models of the Boeing 737 and the all-new 757.<\/b><\/p>\n

Over the years, <\/span>passenger airlines began to retire their Boeing 727s from service, <\/b>to be <\/span>replaced by more modern aircraft. <\/b>This meant that several Boeing 727s became available for use, with cargo airlines keen to incorporate the workhorse into their fleets.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of publication, <\/span>around 15 Boeing 727-200s <\/b>are part of <\/span>cargo airlines worldwide. Latin America is one of the few markets where the 727s still operate, <\/b>in three different airlines, all of them cargo carriers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Air Class Cargo<\/b><\/a> is a Uruguayan airline based at <\/b>Montevideo Airport<\/b> (MVD\/SUMU)<\/span> in Uruguay<\/b>. Its fleet consists of <\/span>two Boeing 727-200(F) and three Metro 23 aircraft,<\/b> flying to <\/span>Buenos Aires<\/b> (EZE\/SAEZ) <\/span>and <\/b>Asunci\u00f3n<\/b> (ASU\/SGAS)<\/span>,<\/b> in <\/span>Argentina <\/b>and <\/span>Paraguay<\/b>, respectively, as well as operating special flights for musical bands to transport all their equipment for their shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> Uruguayan airline added its first Boeing 727(F) in April 2011,<\/b> during its first fleet expansion, as it had been operating with Metro and Embraer 110 Brasilia aircraft. This 727 has the registration<\/span> CX-CAR<\/b> and continues to fly for Air Class.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>October 2015<\/b>, the <\/span>second aircraft was acquired,<\/b> which was registered as <\/span>CX-CLB.<\/b> Following just over a year flying for <\/span>Air Class,<\/b> the 727 was retired in <\/span>January 2017<\/b> and incorporated by <\/span>Aerosucre<\/b>, a <\/span>well-known South American airline due to its particular operations.<\/b><\/p>\n

Air Class operated solely with the <\/span>Boeing 727-214(Adv)(F) <\/b>registration<\/span> CX-CAR<\/b> until <\/span>October 2022,<\/b> when it <\/span>confirmed the addition of another Boeing 727 freighter.<\/b> In this case, it came from <\/span>Sideral,<\/b> a <\/span>Brazilian cargo airline that was retiring these aircraft from regular service.<\/b><\/p>\n

This aircraft was part of Sideral, although it previously belonged to Rio Linhas A\u00e9reas, another Brazilian cargo carrier to which Sideral had leased its aircraft prior to ceasing operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The world-famous Colombian airline <\/b>Aerosucre L\u00edneas A\u00e9reas<\/b> (A4\/KRE) inducted its<\/span> first Boeing 727 in March 1992,<\/b> a <\/span>Boeing 727-100<\/b> configured for <\/span>passenger operations but used for cargo transport.<\/b> HK-1717 <\/b>and <\/span>HK-727<\/b> were the <\/span>registration numbers of Aerosucre\u2019s two Boeing 727-100s,<\/b> being <\/span>retired in 2015 after more than 50 years of service.<\/b><\/p>\n

Aerosucre currently has two Boeing 727-200(Adv)(F) aircraft,<\/b> with registration numbers <\/span>HK-5216<\/b> and <\/span>HK-5239<\/b>.<\/b> Bogot\u00e1\u2019s El Dorado Airport<\/b> (BOG\/SKBO) is the main base for these aircraft, with <\/span>Arauca, Barquisimeto, Barranquilla, Cali, Caracas, Las Piedras, Medell\u00edn, Puerto Carre\u00f1o, and Willemstad<\/b> as some of its destinations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Boeing 727-227(Adv)(F)<\/b>, registry <\/span>HK-5216,<\/b> has serial number 21996 and <\/span>made its first flight on January 12th, 1980.<\/b> It was <\/span>converted to a freighter in 2003,<\/b> following <\/span>23 years of passenger airline operations,<\/b> serving<\/span> Braniff, USAir, and American Trans Air.<\/b><\/p>\n

Air Class, then Aerosucre<\/h3>\n

In <\/span>2002<\/b>, the <\/span>aircraft was incorporated by DHL,<\/b> starting cargo operations on J<\/strong><\/span>anuary 31st, 2003.<\/b> It was <\/span>part of the DHL Group until 2015, flying for DHL Aviation in Europe until September 2009,<\/b> arriving in <\/span>South America for the first time in October 2009 with Vensecar Internacional,<\/b> a <\/span>Venezuelan cargo airline subsidiary of DHL Aviation.<\/b><\/p>\n

On <\/span>May 21st, 2015,<\/b> one month after being<\/span> retired from Vensecar Internacional,<\/b> this <\/span>Boeing 727 <\/b>joined <\/span>Air Class Cargo,<\/b> the Uruguayan cargo airline. It received the <\/span>Uruguayan<\/b> registration CX-CLB and operated in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay until February 2017, <\/b>when it <\/span>joined Aerosucre with the registration number HK-5216.<\/b><\/p>\n

Aerosucre<\/b> plans to <\/span>replace its two 45-year-old Boeing 727s with other Boeing 737s. <\/b>According to our database, the average age of the <\/span>Aerosucre fleet is around 40 years,<\/b> with the <\/span>Boeing 737-400(F) being its newest aircraft,<\/b> which are <\/span>32 to 33 years old.<\/b><\/p>\n

Solar Cargo is a Venezuelan airline<\/b> founded in <\/span>February 2001<\/b> and based at <\/span>Maiquet\u00eda International Airport<\/b> (CCS\/SVMI), located north of <\/span>Caracas<\/b>. Operations began shortly thereafter with t<\/span>hree Antonov An-26<\/b> aircraft, flying mainly between <\/span>Venezuela and the United States.<\/b><\/p>\n

As a <\/span>result of the pandemic and the severe economic crisis in Venezuela,<\/b> Solar Cargo ceased operations in 2020,<\/b> although it had not had any operational aircraft for quite a while, as the <\/span>Antonov An-26s had been withdrawn in 2013<\/b>, and its <\/span>DC-10-30F, incorporated in 2012, was not longer in service.<\/b><\/p>\n

In<\/span> 2024, Estelar Latinoam\u00e9rica,<\/b> a <\/span>Venezuelan passenger airline,<\/b> acquired Solar Cargo, resuming operations on May 10th, 2025, using a Boeing 727.<\/b><\/p>\n

L\u00edneas A\u00e9reas Suramericanas, its previous operator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The<\/span> aircraft in question is a 43-year-old Boeing 727-2X3(Adv)(F),<\/b> currently registered as <\/span>YV665T<\/b>, <\/b>which previously operated for L\u00edneas A\u00e9reas Suramericanas, another South American cargo airline. <\/span>Caracas remains as Solar Cargo\u2019s base,<\/b> operating flights within <\/span>Venezuela <\/b>and to <\/span>Colombia <\/b>and <\/span>the Caribbean<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 30th, 2025,<\/b> UniWorld Air Cargo <\/b>(U7\/UCG),<\/b> a <\/span>Panamanian cargo airline<\/b> operating in <\/span>Aruba, Colombia, Cura\u00e7ao, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, and Venezuela,<\/b> retired its last <\/span>Boeing 727-200,<\/b> which was registered <\/span>HP-1939UCG<\/b> and had been incorporated in <\/span>May 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n

This <\/span>aircraft started flying in October 1981<\/b> with <\/span>Eastern Air Lines,<\/b> under registration number <\/span>N815EA<\/b>, being <\/span>converted into a freighter in October 2004<\/b> after joining <\/span>Capital Cargo International Airlines,<\/b> a <\/span>US cargo airline that ceased services in September 2019.<\/b><\/p>\n

As you can see in our database, on <\/span>May 30th, 2025<\/b> at 10:52 local time, <\/span>it departed from <\/span>Tocumen International Airport<\/b> in <\/span>Panama City bound for Havana<\/b>,<\/b> and later that day to <\/span>Saltillo, a Mexican city in the north of the country.<\/b> Since then, <\/span>the aircraft has been parked there.<\/b><\/p>\n
