Fruit and vegetable producers in southern Morocco welcomed Friday\u2019s signing of amended trade letters between Morocco and the European Union, saying the move strengthens both agricultural investment in the region and the country\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
The agreement, signed at the European Commission in Brussels, grants farm products from Morocco\u2019s southern provinces the same preferential access to European markets as goods from other regions of the country.<\/p>\n
It also introduces labeling requirements that identify the origin of products from Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab.<\/p>\n
The timing comes just before a European Court of Justice ruling annulling the 2019 EU-Morocco agriculture and fisheries deals, which the court said were signed without consulting the \u201cSahrawi people,\u201d takes effect Saturday. The updated arrangement reflects efforts in Rabat and Brussels to safeguard their strategic partnership and maintain legal and political continuity.<\/p>\n
Ali Bida, a grower and exporter from the southern provinces, told Hespress AR that the amended agreement ensures \u201ccontinued preferential access for agricultural products from the Moroccan Sahara\u201d and underscores Morocco\u2019s sovereignty over its territory.<\/p>\n
He said the deal will expand investment opportunities and help secure stable markets for exporters, while encouraging diversification into new destinations such as the U.K. and the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Serhan El Harach, CEO of the Agida agricultural group, described the deal as \u201ca victory for Morocco\u2019s territorial integrity and a setback for opponents relying on European courts.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said young entrepreneurs in Dakhla have long sought to export under the \u201cDakhla-Morocco\u201d label, adding that new irrigation projects using desalinated seawater for 5,000 hectares of farmland will open further opportunities.<\/p>\n
The EU and Morocco maintain close trade ties, with agriculture and fisheries representing key pillars of their partnership. Officials from both sides say the amended agreement aims to reinforce mutual trust and secure the role of Moroccan agriculture in supporting Europe\u2019s food security.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
