In this post, we cross the Atlantic Ocean to discuss the busiest route in Europe, which, in previous years, used to be <\/span>Madrid Barajas <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Barcelona El Prat <\/b>in <\/span>Spain<\/b>, but over the time this domestic connection has been losing passenger demand, currently having <\/span>100 flights per week<\/b>. Madrid is no longer Barcelona\u2019s main destination, and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to our database, considering weekly flights, <\/span>Gran Canaria<\/b> \u2013 <\/span>Tenerife North<\/b>, <\/span>Barcelona <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Palma de Mallorca<\/b>, and <\/span>Oslo <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Trondheim <\/b>are the <\/span>busiest routes <\/b>in <\/span>Europe<\/b>, with the first <\/span>two being domestic services in Spain<\/b> and the latter a <\/span>domestic connection in Norway.<\/b><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the <\/span>international sector<\/b>, <\/span>Madrid <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Lisbon <\/b>is the l<\/span>eading route in Europe<\/b> in terms of <\/span>weekly frequencies<\/b>, surpassing<\/span> 130<\/b>, distributed between <\/span>Air Europa <\/b>(UX\/AEA), <\/span>easyJet <\/b>(U2\/EZY), <\/span>Iberia <\/b>(IB\/IBE), <\/span>Ryanair <\/b>(FR\/RYR), and <\/span>TAP Air Portugal <\/b>(TP\/TAP). <\/span>London Heathrow<\/b> has several <\/span>routes within Europe <\/b>with <\/span>more than 100 weekly flights<\/b>, including <\/span>Dublin<\/b>, <\/span>Amsterdam<\/b>, and <\/span>Frankfurt<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of publication, <\/span>Gran Canaria <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Tenerife North<\/b>, an inter-island route in Spain, leads the list, being the <\/span>only one in Europe to surpass 200 regular weekly flights.<\/b> Binter Canarias <\/b>and <\/span>Canaryfly<\/b>, two airlines based in <\/span>Gran Canaria<\/b>, are the sole operators, mainly using <\/span>ATR 72-600<\/b> aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

Binter<\/h3>\n

O<\/span>ne of <\/span>Spain\u2019s main carriers<\/b>, Binter Canarias, has its operations focused on the <\/span>Spanish islands <\/b>in the <\/span>Atlantic Ocean<\/b>. Since <\/span>2023<\/b>, with the <\/span>introduction of several Embraer E195-E2<\/b> aircraft <\/span>to its fleet<\/b>, the <\/span>airline began flying to mainland Spain<\/b> from the Canary Islands, having regular routes to <\/span>A Coru\u00f1a, Almer\u00eda, Asturias, Badajoz, C\u00f3rdoba, Granada, Jerez, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca, Pamplona, Santander, San Sebasti\u00e1n, Valencia, Valladolid, Vigo, <\/b>and <\/span>Zaragoza.<\/b><\/p>\n

Its fleet consists of <\/span>42 aircraft<\/b>, including <\/span>26 ATR 72-600s<\/b>, which are on average <\/span>six years old<\/b>, and <\/span>16 Embraer E195-E2s<\/b>, averaging <\/span>three years<\/b>. <\/span>Binter <\/b>is the <\/span>leading airline in the Canary Islands<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canaryfly<\/h3>\n

Canaryfly <\/b>is the other company operating <\/span>inter-island<\/b> flights within the Canary Islands<\/b>, with a <\/span>fleet of five ATR 72-500 aircraft.<\/b> The airline was <\/span>founded in 2008<\/b>, beginning <\/span>regular operations on October 30th<\/b> of that year with <\/span>Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner <\/b>aircraft, which were later <\/span>replaced <\/b>by <\/span>ATR 42 and Dash 8 aircraft.<\/b> The <\/span>ATR 72 <\/b>aircraft joined the fleet as of <\/span>2019<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flights <\/b>between <\/span>Gran Canaria <\/b>and <\/span>Tenerife<\/b>, whether <\/span>Tenerife North <\/b>or <\/span>Tenerife South<\/b>, cover a <\/span>distance of approximately<\/b> 120 kilometers<\/b>, climbing rapidly to around 10,000 feet and landing 20 minutes after departure. <\/span>Taking both airports into account<\/b>, there are<\/span> over 250 flights per week connecting the two islands.<\/b><\/p>\n

Gran Canaria <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Lanzarote <\/b>and <\/span>Gran Canaria <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Fuerteventura <\/b>are the other main routes in the <\/span>Canary Islands<\/b>, with around <\/span>150 <\/b>and <\/span>125 flights a week<\/b>, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Palma de Mallorca <\/b>has recently<\/span> undergone significant development as a beach destination, <\/b>which has resulted <\/span>in a major increase in flights within Europe, as well as intercontinental services.<\/b> This <\/span>consolidated position has<\/b> attracted many new international airlines<\/b>, including <\/span>Air Canada<\/b>, <\/span>Etihad Airways<\/b>, and <\/span>United Airlines<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of its <\/span>main current routes <\/b>is <\/span>Barcelona<\/b>, with approximately <\/span>175 weekly flights between three different carriers<\/b>. <\/span>Madrid <\/b>also has significant connectivity with <\/span>Son Sant Joan International Airport <\/b>in <\/span>Mallorca<\/b>, having over <\/span>130 flights per week<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

To close the top three busiest routes in Europe in terms of weekly flights, we must fly to <\/span>Scandinavia<\/b>, more precisely to <\/span>Norway<\/b>, with its<\/span> main domestic route<\/b>: <\/span>Oslo Gardermoen <\/b>\u2013 <\/span>Trondheim V\u00e6rnes<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Norwegian <\/b>and <\/span>Scandinavian Airlines System <\/b>(SAS) are almost the only <\/span>operators between the two cities<\/b>, reaching up to <\/span>160 flights per week <\/b>in total. <\/span>Wider\u00f8e<\/b>, a <\/span>Norwegian airline<\/b>, serves <\/span>two weekly flights <\/b>on this route, but exceeds <\/span>15 weekly frequencies <\/b>to <\/span>Oslo Torp Sanderfjord Airport<\/b>, located south of the city, from <\/span>Trondheim<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
