The UN on Monday warned that generative AI could become \u201ca modern-day Frankenstein\u2019s monster\u201d, with human rights the first casualty, as powerful tech giants unleash the technology on the world.<\/p>\n
UN rights chief Volker Turk said generative AI had \u201ctremendous promise\u201d but told the world body\u2019s business and human rights forum that its \u201cexploitation for purely political or economic benefit can manipulate, distort, and distract\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen powerful tech giants introduce new technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, human rights can be the first casualty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe threats to several human rights, including privacy, political participation, free expression and work are clear and present,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout proper safeguards and regulations, AI systems have the potential to turn into a modern-day Frankenstein\u2019s monster\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that the threats of today \u201ccould materialise into harms that undermine the promise of emerging technologies and could unleash unpredictable consequences\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernments have a responsibility to come together to prevent such an outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
Beyond generative AI, Turk highlighted the threat posed by an increasing concentration of corporate power and the massive \u201caccumulation of personal and corporate wealth among a handful of players\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn some cases, this exceeds the economies of entire countries,\u201d he said, stressing that when \u201cpower is not constrained by law, it can lead to abuse and subjugation\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
