Airlink<\/b> (4Z\/LNK) is one of <\/span>South Africa\u2019s leading airlines,<\/b> based at <\/span>Cape Town International Airport<\/b> and <\/span>Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport<\/b>, the <\/span>country\u2019s main cities,<\/b> operating a <\/span>fleet of narrow-body aircraft.<\/b><\/h4>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The<\/span> airline was founded in 1992<\/b> and <\/span>began operations in 1995 under the name SA Airlink.<\/b> That same year, it<\/span> joined the South African Airways frequent flyer program<\/b> and <\/span>aligned its branding with South African Airways,<\/b> the <\/span>country\u2019s flag carrier.<\/b><\/p>\n

Its <\/span>relationship with South African strengthened over the months<\/b>, merging with <\/span>South African Airways and South African Express in a strategic alliance,<\/b> which led to the <\/span>creation of the largest route network in Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

However, <\/b>in <\/span>2006, South African Airlink left its strategic alliance with South African Airways,<\/b> removing the <\/span>term \u201cSouth African\u201d from its name but maintaining its franchise agreement.<\/b> This <\/span>allowed the airline to operate independently with its own structure,<\/b> introducing its <\/span>new livery shortly thereafter and completing the IATA Operational Safety Audit<\/b> (IOSA), being assigned the <\/span>code 4Z.<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>airline\u2019s first scheduled flight after its exit from the alliance with SAA<\/b> took place in <\/span>January 2006,<\/b> using a <\/span>Jetstream 41.<\/b> At that time, its <\/span>fleet consisted of 13 British Aerospace Jetstream 41s and 5 Embraer ERJ-135LRs<\/b>, which already featured the carrier\u2019s new livery with the country\u2019s distinctive colors, along with the bird emblem.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airlink continued to develop its operations in South Africa,<\/b> as well as in <\/span>central and southern Africa,<\/b> adding <\/span>new international routes and Embraer aircraft to its fleet,<\/b> which came to <\/span>replace the Jetstream 41, British Aerospace 146-200, British Aerospace Avro RJ85, Boeing 737-200s, <\/b>and <\/span>Fokker 28s.<\/b><\/p>\n

Still <\/span>operating under the name South African Airlink,<\/b> the airline incorporated its <\/span>first two Embraer aircraft into its fleet in May 2001,<\/b> both <\/span>ERJ-135LR models,<\/b> receiving the registrations <\/span>ZS-SJW<\/b> and <\/span>ZS-SJX.<\/b> Later that year, it <\/span>acquired two more aircraft,<\/b> registered <\/span>ZS-OTM<\/b> and <\/span>ZS-OTN<\/b>, and in <\/span>April 2003<\/b>, the aircraft registered <\/span>ZS-OUV.<\/b><\/p>\n

As <\/span>Airlink<\/b>, the <\/span>first Embraer aircraft added to its fleet was the Embraer ERJ-135LR <\/b>registration <\/span>ZS-SNX, <\/b>in <\/span>January 2010,<\/b> arriving from <\/span>Chautauqua Airlines,<\/b> a <\/span>US airline<\/b>. <\/span>Twelve <\/b>more <\/span>Embraer ERJ-135LRs joined Airlink until 2016,<\/b> which continue to <\/span>operate with the South African airline.<\/b><\/p>\n

In <\/span>2016<\/b>, with the <\/span>aim of further expanding its operations,<\/b> the<\/span> airline incorporated its first Embraer ERJ-140LR aircraft,<\/b> similar to the <\/span>Embraer ERJ-135LR but configured with a few more seats and slight operational improvements<\/b>. <\/span>ZS-ALL<\/b> and <\/span>ZS-ALM<\/b> were their registrations, with several more arriving between <\/span>2017 <\/b>and <\/span>2018<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airlink achieved a historic milestone in its fleet in 2017,<\/b> by <\/span>adding its first brand-new Embraer 190,<\/b> which received the registry<\/span> ZS-YAD.<\/b><\/p>\n

This <\/span>aircraft arrived in Johannesburg on December 23rd, 2017,<\/b> from <\/span>S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos (Brazil), <\/b>where <\/span>Embraer has its main facilities,<\/b> making<\/span> stopovers in Recife, Abidjan, <\/b>and <\/span>Libreville.<\/b> It began operating in <\/span>January 2018.<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Embraer 190 ZS-YAD<\/b> was the <\/span>fourth E190 introduced by Airlink into its fleet,<\/b> being all of them added in <\/span>2017<\/b>. <\/span>ZS-YAA, ZS-YAB, <\/b>and <\/span>ZS-YAC, its first three E190,<\/b> were<\/b> acquired <\/b>from <\/span>Virgin Australia,<\/b> which had retired them from service in <\/span>2016<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airlink currently owns 29 Embraer 190 aircraft,<\/b> all configured with <\/span>6 seats <\/b>in <\/span>Business <\/b>and <\/span>92 seats <\/b>in <\/span>Economy<\/b>. Its <\/span>entire fleet of E190s continues to operate,<\/b> as do the <\/span>six Embraer 195s added between 2022 and 2023,<\/b> its <\/span>largest aircraft in operation to date.<\/b><\/p>\n

With regard to other aircraft added to its fleet, also <\/span>Embraer<\/b>, between<\/span> late 2017 <\/b>and <\/span>early 2018,<\/b> three Embraer 170s were incorporated,<\/b> and in <\/span>2024<\/b>, <\/span>four Embraer 175s.<\/b> The <\/span>E170s with registration numbers ZS-YBA, ZS-YBB, <\/b>and <\/span>ZS-YBC,<\/b> and the <\/span>E175s registered as ZS-YBD, ZS-YBE, ZS-YBF, <\/b>and <\/span>ZS-YBG,<\/b> remain in service.<\/b><\/p>\n

Eight years after adding its first brand-new aircraft to its fleet,<\/b> Airlink announced another historic milestone:<\/b> an <\/span>agreement with Azorra,<\/b> one of the leading aircraft leasing companies, <\/span>to add 10 new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft,<\/b> scheduled to be <\/span>delivered starting in 2025.<\/b><\/p>\n

The<\/span> first Embraer E195-E2,<\/b> registration <\/span>ZS-ARF,<\/b> departed S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos on September 22nd at 21:00 local time bound for Cape Town,<\/b> where it <\/span>landed at 09:58 local time on September 23rd after 7 hours and 58 minutes.<\/b> A few hours later,<\/span> this same aircraft took off for Johannesburg,<\/b> Airlink\u2019s main base,<\/span> landing at 13:09 local time.<\/b><\/p>\n

Four days later,<\/b> the <\/span>second brand-new Embraer E195-E2,<\/b> registered as <\/span>ZS-BJW,<\/b> arrived in Johannesburg from S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos via Cape Town.<\/b> In <\/span>early October<\/b>, <\/span>Airlink added its third E195-E2,<\/b> bearing the registry<\/span> ZS-LKA,<\/b> which <\/span>flew non-stop between S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Campos and Johannesburg <\/b>in <\/span>8 hours and 19 minutes.<\/b><\/p>\n

At the time of publication, <\/span>Airlink\u2019s three Embraer E195-E2 aircraft are parked at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg,<\/b> undergoing the necessary <\/span>certification process with the South African Civil Aviation Authority.<\/b> Initially, <\/span>the airline planned to begin regular operations with these aircraft in December 2025,<\/b> but this has been <\/span>postponed until early 2026.<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>E195-E2s<\/b>, featuring a <\/span>two-by-two cabin layout for 136 passengers,<\/b> are <\/span>scheduled to operate their first commercial flight on January 31st, 2026,<\/b> starting with the <\/span>Johannesburg \u2013 Nelspruit, Nelspruit \u2013 Cape Town, Cape Town \u2013 Hoedspruit, <\/b>and <\/span>Hoedspruit \u2013 Johannesburg<\/b> routes.<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>February 1st, 2026 onwards,<\/b> in addition to the above-mentioned routes, <\/span>it will make its first flight on the Johannesburg \u2013 Cape Town service,<\/b> the <\/span>main route in South Africa,<\/b> which <\/span>currently exceeds 400 flights per week.<\/b> Airlink offers 40 weekly flights with Embraer 190 and Embraer 195 aircraft,<\/b> and the <\/span>introduction of the E195-E2 will bring an increase in seats between the two cities.<\/b><\/p>\n

Airlink has 72 aircraft in its fleet,<\/b> all of them <\/span>Embraer<\/b>, including <\/span>16 Embraer 135s, 11 Embraer 140s, 3 Embraer 170s, 4 Embraer 175s, 29 Embraer 190s, 6 Embraer 195s, <\/b>and <\/span>3 Embraer E195-E2s.<\/b> It still has <\/span>seven E2s to incorporate, with this order expected to be completed in 2027.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In terms of routes, <\/span>Cape Town and Johannesburg are its main hubs,<\/b> offering <\/span>significant connectivity within South Africa,<\/b> as well as to <\/span>other countries in southern Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
