The <\/span><b>airline has been offering the Shanghai-Auckland route since December 2014,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with the <\/span><b>Chinese city being one of its current four destinations performed to\/from AKL,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> including <\/span><b>Hangzhou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Sydney<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Shanghai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and now <\/span><b>Buenos Aires<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Buenos Aires is the latest addition,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> resulting from an agreement with <\/span><b>Auckland Airport, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which <\/span><b>encouraged the re-establishment of flights between New Zealand and Argentina.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60683\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/10039151\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60683 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-ZRH.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-ZRH.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-ZRH-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-ZRH-1024x656.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-ZRH-768x492.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas Boeing 747-200 \u2013 April 1980<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>history of Argentina and its flights to Oceania started in the 1970s,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with special operations by the <\/span><b>Argentine Air Force using Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">being in <\/span><b>December 1973 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><b>first flight between Argentina and New Zealand with a stopover at Marambio Base, an Argentine base in Antarctica.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas was the first airline to launch commercial flights to Oceania from Argentina,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> commencing on <\/span><b>June 7th, 1980,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with <\/span><b>Boeing 747-200 aircraft. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to <\/span><b>wind conditions on the eastbound-westbound route,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the <\/span><b>Buenos Aires-Auckland leg included a technical stop in R\u00edo Gallegos,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in <\/span><b>Argentine Patagonia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which was <\/span><b>maintained throughout all operations using the 747.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>Auckland-Buenos Aires segment was always non-stop.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60684\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60684\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/6730797\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60684 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-MAD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-MAD.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-MAD-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Aerolineas-Argentinas-747-MAD-768x527.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas Boeing 747-200 \u2013 August 1994<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Argentine flag carrier was the only airline operating flights in the Latin America-Oceania market until the mid-1990s,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when <\/span><b>Qantas began services between Sydney and Buenos Aires<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> via <\/span><b>Auckland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on <\/span><b>Boeing 747-400<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> aircraft. This <\/span><b>stopover in Auckland was short-lived,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as <\/span><b>non-stop flights commenced by late 1990s.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>LAN Chile,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> now known as <\/span><b>LATAM Airlines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, entered the <\/span><b>Latin America-Oceania market in 2001<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after <\/span><b>adding its first Airbus A340-300 to its fleet.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The arrival of these aircraft <\/span><b>permitted the launch of the Santiago de Chile \u2013 Auckland \u2013 Sydney route<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and vice versa, which operated through late <\/span><b>October 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Currently, it offers the <\/span><b>Santiago \u2013 Auckland \u2013 Santiago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Santiago \u2013 Sydney \u2013 Santiago<\/b> <b>routes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in addition to the <\/span><b>Santiago \u2013 Melbourne \u2013 Santiago route, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all with <\/span><b>Boeing 787 Dreamliners.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60685\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60685\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>social situation,<\/b> <b>Qantas suspended its flights to Buenos Aires <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in <\/span><b>2001,<\/b> <b>resuming them in August 2008<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and once again <\/span><b>ceasing them on March 24th, 2012.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The following day, the <\/span><b>Australian airline launched its services between Sydney and Santiago de Chile,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also with <\/span><b>Boeing 747-400(ER) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aircraft. <\/span><b>Under an agreement with LAN,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Chile\u2019s leading airline and at that time part of Oneworld,<\/span><b> Qantas replaced Buenos Aires with Santiago de Chile as its sole destination in Latin America.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For its part, <\/span><b>Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas continued to operate between Argentina and Oceania,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> although in <\/span><b>2012 it also reduced its presence on the continent by permanently ceasing operations in Auckland.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60686\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/7117543\" 1995<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By <strong>mid-<\/strong><\/span><b>1999, the Argentine state-own airline incorporated its first Airbus A340-200s,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which enabled it to <\/span><b>launch non-stop flights between Buenos Aires and Oceania.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The<\/span><b> first A340 service on this connection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> took place <strong>in late<\/strong> <\/span><b>1999.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas remained the sole operator in the Argentina-Oceania market after Qantas\u2019 cease,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with <\/span><b>three weekly flights on the Buenos Aires \u2013 Sydney \u2013 Buenos Aires route using 249-seat Airbus A340-200 aircraft.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> However, the<\/span><b> Argentine airline followed in the footsteps of its Australian counterpart<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> just <\/span><b>two years later.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60687\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/7798319\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60687\" <\/span><b>April 1st, 2014, Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas\u2019 last flight from Sydney Kingsford International Airport<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> landed at <\/span><b>Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at least until now. The <\/span><b>Airbus A340-211 with registration LV-ZPO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> arrived with <\/span><b>214 passengers on board,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> an 86% occupancy rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas bid farewell to this market following almost 34 years of uninterrupted operations.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> During <\/span><b>2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the company <\/span><b>operated a few flights between Buenos Aires and Shanghai via Auckland and vice versa in search of COVID-19 vaccines, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but it never returned with regular flights.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60688\" style=\"width: 1400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/9734485\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full <\/span><b>few months after Aerol\u00edneas Argentinas\u2019 exit,<\/b> <b>Air New Zealand made a historic announcement,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> both for the airline and for Latin America: the <\/span><b>launch of its first regular destination in the Americas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> beyond the United States and Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Star Alliance member inaugurated its flights between Auckland and Buenos Aires on December 1st, 2015,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conducting <\/span><b>three weekly frequencies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by 312-seat <\/span><b>Boeing 777-200(ER) aircraft.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The announcement had been made in <\/span><b>December 2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and ticket sales had begun in <\/span><b>March 2015<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/8438947\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Air-New-Zealand-777-AKL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"702\" had high occupancy rates from the start,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reaching its peak during the <\/span><b>2018\/2019 South American summer,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offering up to <\/span><b>six flights per week.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It operated mainly with <\/span><b>Boeing 777-200(ER)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> seating <\/span><b>302 passengers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and some sporadic flights with <\/span><b>Boeing 777-300(ER) aircraft.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><b>March 2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, due to the <\/span><b>COVID-19<\/b> <b>pandemic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Air New Zealand announced the suspension of some of its long-haul routes,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> including <\/span><b>Auckland \u2013 Buenos Aires.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> At first, <\/span><b>this was supposed to be a temporary suspension,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> but <\/span><b>flights to Buenos Aires were permanently discontinued,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> marking the <\/span><b>end of Air New Zealand\u2019s service to Latin America.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Argentina was once again without a non-stop connection to Oceania, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">while <\/span><b>Chile had an important network of routes to Australia and New Zealand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> operated by <\/span><b>LATAM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in addition to <\/span><b>Qantas flights from Sydney.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jetphotos.com\/photo\/9292151\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60690\" 400\">In <\/span><b>June 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Auckland Airport published a press release on its website<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> about the <\/span><b>launch of a new regular route between China and South America through Auckland,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> operated by a <\/span><b>Chinese airline.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The article mentioned the possibility of <\/span><b>restoring flights between New Zealand and Argentina,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with a route that would <\/span><b>not start or end in either of these two countries,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the <\/span><b>entire journey would be Shanghai \u2013 Auckland \u2013 Buenos Aires and vice
