Morocco placed 100th out of 177 countries in the 2025 Basel Anti-Money Laundering Index, reflecting a medium level of risk related to money laundering and financial crime, according to the latest report.<\/p>\n
Morocco scored 5.04 out of 10 in the annual index, which assesses countries\u2019 exposure to money laundering and terrorist financing risks. The ranking marks a five-place improvement compared with last year, when Morocco ranked 95th out of 164 countries with a score of 4.94. In 2023, the country ranked 103rd with a score of 4.69.<\/p>\n
The Basel Index draws on data from international institutions including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the Bank for International Settlements, as well as assessments by global central banks and the Financial Action Task Force. The index evaluates countries based on the strength of their legal and institutional frameworks to combat financial crime.<\/p>\n
The 14th edition of the Basel AML Index showed a slight improvement in the global average risk score in 2025, which declined marginally to 5.28 from 5.30 out of 10, a level still considered high risk.<\/p>\n
Despite the modest improvement, the report said the stable global average provides some reassurance that international efforts to counter money laundering are keeping pace with emerging threats, including the increasing use of virtual assets and artificial intelligence for illicit activities.<\/p>\n
In the Middle East and North Africa region, Djibouti recorded the highest risk score at 6.93, followed by Algeria at 6.82. Israel and Oman were among the lowest-risk countries in the region, with scores of 4.06 and 4.25, respectively.<\/p>\n
Globally, Myanmar and Haiti ranked as the highest-risk countries, with scores of 8.18 and 8.12, reflecting a deterioration compared with 2024. Finland, Iceland and San Marino were rated as the lowest-risk countries, each posting scores close to 3, according to the report.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
