Emirates Airline<\/b> (EK\/UAE), the <\/span>leading carrier in the Middle East<\/b>, has a <\/span>large fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft,<\/b> all <\/span>based at Dubai International Airport.<\/b> The airline <\/span>began operations in 1985 with two aircraft,<\/b> which were not its own, <\/span>expanding rapidly from the early 1990s onwards<\/b> after placing a <\/span>major order for new Boeing 777s and changing its business model<\/b> by <\/span>developing a hub in Dubai.<\/b><\/p>\n

On <\/span>October 25th, 1985,<\/b> with a <\/span>Boeing 737-300 and an Airbus A300-600B2,<\/b> both <\/span>wet-leased from Pakistan International Airlines<\/b> (PIA), the <\/span>airline made its first flights,<\/b> operating the <\/span>Dubai-Karachi and Dubai-Mumbai routes,<\/b> thus<\/span> launching the first airline in the United Arab Emirates.<\/b><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long before <\/span>Emirates added its first own aircraft to its fleet,<\/b> a brand new <\/span>Airbus A310-300.<\/b><\/p>\n

The aircraft in question, an <\/span>Airbus A310-304(ET) with registration number A6-EKA,<\/b> departed from<\/span> Toulouse on June 28th, 1987,<\/b> arriving in <\/span>Dubai two days later,\u00a0<\/b>and entering into regular service<\/strong> as of early July 1987.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In its <\/span>first five years<\/b> of operation, <\/span>Emirates reached 13 regular destinations in its network,<\/b> including <\/span>five in the Middle East, five in Asia, two in Europe, and one in Africa.<\/b> All of these were <\/span>operated by its own Airbus A310-300s,<\/b> as well as <\/span>Boeing 727-200s, Boeing 737-300s and Airbus A300s.<\/b><\/p>\n

As for their destinations,<\/b> all of them from\/to <\/span>Dubai<\/b>, were the following: 1985\u2014<\/span>Mumbai, Delhi, Karachi;<\/b> 1986\u2014<\/span>Amman, Colombo, Cairo, Dhaka; <\/b>1987\u2014<\/span>Male, Frankfurt, Istanbul;<\/b> 1988\u2014<\/span>Damascus<\/b>; 1989\u2014<\/span>Jeddah, Kuwait.<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>1990s commenced with two major announcements:<\/b> the <\/span>expansion of Dubai Airport Terminal,<\/b> with an investment of<\/span> $2 billion, <\/b>and the <\/span>order for its first own wide-body aircraft,<\/b> the <\/span>Boeing 777<\/b>, which <\/span>arrived as of 1996.<\/b><\/p>\n

Emirates continued to expand its connectivity from DXB,<\/b> adding<\/span> new routes in Africa, Asia, and Europe,<\/b> as well as <\/span>reaching Oceania for the first time.<\/b> The main highlights regarding new routes include the <\/span>launch of flights to Kuala Lumpur, London, Melbourne, Munich, Paris, Rome, Singapore, <\/b>and <\/span>Zurich<\/b> during this decade.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the <\/span>next decade began with a historic announcement for Emirates and Airbus,<\/b> along with <\/span>commercial aviation,<\/b> with the <\/span>introduction of the world\u2019s largest passenger aircraft.<\/b><\/p>\n

At the <\/span>Farnborough Air Show 2000,<\/b> Emirates became the first airline to order the Airbus A380-800,<\/b> the<\/span> world\u2019s largest passenger aircraft,<\/b> which was <\/span>scheduled to enter service in 2007.<\/b><\/p>\n

As planned, in <\/span>July 2008<\/b>, <\/span>Emirates incorporated its first Airbus A380,<\/b> marking the <\/span>commencement of a new era.<\/b> The<\/span> Airbus A380-800 joined the Emirates fleet for the first time,<\/b> which would eventually<\/span> become the main operator to date,<\/b> and will<\/span> continue to be so in the future, <\/b>as it <\/span>plans to operate these aircraft until at least 2040.<\/b><\/p>\n

Emirates\u2019 first Airbus A380-861 was registered as A6-EDA,<\/b> landing in <\/span>Dubai on July 29th, 2008<\/b>, from <\/span>Toulouse<\/b>, brand <\/span>new from the factory. <\/b>Due to the <\/span>COVID-19 pandemic<\/b>, this <\/span>aircraft and six other A380s<\/b> were <\/span>retired between February and March 2020,<\/b> with <\/span>most of them being scrapped.<\/b><\/p>\n

The<\/span> airline has different seat configurations on its Airbus A380s,<\/b> some with <\/span>more Premium and Business seats,<\/b> while others have a <\/span>high-density layout with over 555 seats in Economy.<\/b><\/p>\n
