    Initially, there was speculation<\/strong> that the intervention<\/strong> in the early hours of 3 January<\/strong> could cause an earthquake<\/strong> in the international oil market<\/strong> and send crude prices skyrocketing. However, the message of calm issued by OPEC<\/strong> at its meeting in early January and the evolution of the market in the days that followed ruled out that possibility.<\/p>\n

    Stable market<\/h2>\n

    During last Friday’s session, 9 January<\/strong>, the price of a barrel of Brent crude<\/strong> was trading above $62.7<\/strong>, up 1.15%<\/strong> from the previous session, while a barrel of West Texas Intermediate<\/strong> was trading at $58.41, up 1.13%.<\/p>\n

    The calm<\/strong> that has characterised the oil market<\/strong> over the last week highlights the limited impact<\/strong> that Venezuelan oil export figures<\/strong> have on the international market.<\/p>\n

    According to an analysis by Peter Kinsella<\/strong>, global head of currency strategy<\/strong> at Swiss private bank UBP<\/strong>, events in Venezuela will have significant implications<\/strong> for the oil market in the medium term, as US control of Venezuelan exports<\/strong> could force recipient markets such as China and Cuba to seek alternative sources of supply.<\/p>\n

    In the opinion of the UBP analyst<\/strong>, the impact will not be substantial on the global oil market<\/strong>, as US sanctions<\/strong> reduced Venezuela’s exports to one million barrels per day<\/strong>, in a market that shows a surplus of 1.4 million barrels per day, which could grow to two million by the second quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n

    Gold, a safe haven in times of geopolitical instability<\/h2>\n

    While the oil market<\/strong> has reacted with indifference<\/strong> to events in Venezuela, the same cannot be said for precious metals<\/strong>, which have highlighted their status as a safe haven asset<\/strong> in times of geopolitical instability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    It is true that precious metals, especially gold<\/strong> and silver<\/strong>, have been successively breaking their historical price records<\/strong> for months, driven by international geopolitical instability<\/strong> that makes them increasingly attractive to investors seeking a safe and reliable asset.<\/p>\n

    The arrest of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong> has given new impetus<\/strong> to this upward trend<\/strong>, which has been reactivated over the last week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    According to this analyst, the conflicting interests<\/strong> of powers such as the United States<\/strong>, China<\/strong> and Iran<\/strong> will cause geopolitical tensions<\/strong> that will continue to benefit the precious metal.<\/p>\n

    At the time of writing, the price of gold<\/strong> was trading at \u00a34,432.10 per ounce<\/strong> on the London Bullion Market Association<\/strong> (LBMA<\/strong>, the London gold market that sets the price of physical gold), close to the highs it reached in the Christmas week of \u00a34,481 per ounce.<\/p>\n

    The price of gold<\/strong> rose 65%<\/strong> during 2025<\/strong>, from \u00a32,708 per ounce<\/strong> on 1 January to \u00a34,328 on 31 December. Most analysts predict that this rise will continue throughout 2026, driven by investors’ fears of geopolitical events. Even analysts who are most reluctant to bet on gold limit its fall to \u00a33,500 per ounce, well above its price at the beginning of last year.<\/p>\n

    Silver, skyrocketing thanks to AI<\/h2>\n

    Silver<\/strong> has also seen its price skyrocket<\/strong>. On 9 January<\/strong>, the metal was trading on the LBMA<\/strong> at \u00a375.21 per ounce<\/strong>, after reaching an all-time high of \u00a378.99 per ounce on 7 January.<\/p>\n

    During 2025<\/strong>, the price of silver<\/strong> rose by around 145%<\/strong>, making it the precious metal<\/strong> with the highest year-on-year appreciation. In the case of this metal, it should be noted that it is not only a safe-haven asset, but also a metal that serves as a raw material for numerous industrial applications. These include some that have grown exponentially in recent years, such as vehicle electrification and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
