And without a willing partner, something this big simply can&#8217;t get done,\u201d Kirby said in a lengthy statement on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the statement, the United CEO sought to justify what would have been one of the most consequential airline mergers in decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy aspirations could not be more different,\u201d Kirby said, contrasting his proposal with past airline mergers typically focused on cost-cutting.
