France\u2019s justice minister will head to Algeria next week to discuss improving cooperation and the fate of a detained French journalist, his office said Saturday, as ties warm following a diplomatic spat.<\/p>\n
And on Saturday evening, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told France\u2019s La Tribune Dimanche that his Algerian counterpart Said Sayoud would visit Paris in the coming days.<\/p>\n
The office of Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said of his trip, which is planned for Monday: \u201cThe purpose of this trip is to work on opening a new chapter in judicial cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jailed reporter Christophe Gleizes would also be a \u201cmajor topic\u201d, it added.<\/p>\n
Gleizes, 37, was arrested in May 2024 while reporting on a football club in Algeria\u2019s Kabylia region and sentenced to seven years in jail in June last year for \u201cglorifying terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n
Nunez told La Tribune Dimanche of Sayoud\u2019s visit to France: \u201cIt is a very positive signal. Security cooperation is progressively being restored.\u201d<\/p>\n
The two ministers would discuss restoring the two countries\u2019 fight against drug trafficking, he added.<\/p>\n
Asked about the chances of Gleizes being released before this summer\u2019s World Cup, he preferred not to comment, except to say: \u201cWe are still hopeful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Relations between France and its former colony became rocky after Paris in 2024 officially backed Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region, where Algeria supports the pro-independence Polisario Front.<\/p>\n
But France and Algeria agreed in February to restart security cooperation as Interior Minister Laurent Nunez visited Algiers, marking the first sign of a thaw in diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n
After deputy defence minister Alice Rufo met President Abdelmadjid Tebboune last week, France\u2019s ambassador to the North African country returned to his post after being recalled about a year ago at the height of the dispute.<\/p>\n
Gleizes, the journalist, on Monday received his first visit from a diplomat since his detention.<\/p>\n
His mother has said she hopes for \u201cvery positive developments on Christophe\u2019s return to France\u201d by the end of the month, after he dropped an appeal with Algeria\u2019s top court, hoping for a presidential pardon.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
