This reduces the effect of short-term changes in currency values and makes it easier to compare income levels between countries.

Morocco’s figure is just below the upper-middle income threshold of $4,636. Morocco appears in the lower-middle income category alongside countries including India, Egypt, Kenya and Ghana.

The country remains eligible for lending from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank’s lending arm for middle-income economies.

Algeria and Libya stayed in the upper-middle income group, supported largely by oil and gas revenues, while Tunisia, Egypt and Mauritania remained lower-middle income countries.

The World Bank upgraded Jordan, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam from lower-middle to upper-middle income, while Togo advanced from low income to lower-middle income.

The report says those upgrades were driven by a mix of economic growth, export performance, post-crisis recovery and statistical revisions.

Jordan’s promotion, for example, was largely linked to a revision of its national accounts that showed its economy was bigger than previously estimated, while Vietnam and the Philippines benefited from several years of strong economic expansion.

No country was downgraded in this year’s update.

The World Bank says that the income classification is an analytical tool rather than a complete measure of development. It does not capture income inequality, education, health outcomes, poverty levels or vulnerability to economic shocks.

The annual classification groups 218 economies into four income categories using gross national income (GNI) per capita, a measure of the average income earned by a country’s residents, including income from abroad.

For the 2026-2027 fiscal year, countries with a GNI per capita of $1,175 or less are classified as low income. Lower-middle income economies range from $1,176 to $4,635, upper-middle income countries fall between $4,636 and $14,375, while high-income economies have a GNI per capita above $14,375.

The classifications are updated every year because countries’ income levels change through economic growth, inflation, exchange rate movements and revisions to national statistics or population data.

The report says that since 1987, the share of countries classified as low income has fallen from about 30% to around 11%, reflecting decades of economic growth in many parts of the world.

The World Bank also uses income classifications to determine access to some forms of development financing and to monitor global economic progress.

Rephrase in a different way as if you were a native American speaker as a content creation expert and do not talk about yourself or your experience in the text and do not show yourself as an artificial intelligence who wrote and fill the bullet point in the topic and speak the heart of the topic itself and dont take date of blog in ther first and dont take text like box of newsliter subscribe on post from content and romove all linke insert in content and and remove all affiliate disclosure phrases on content like this “This post may contain Amazon or other affiliate links that allow us to earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
