This was 16% higher than the same period last year and generated an estimated €6 billion ($7 billion) in revenue for Russia.

France accounted for 38% of Yamal LNG exports to Europe, Belgium for 27%, and Spain for 25%, according to energy campaign group Urgewald. The group said Europe had received 97% of Yamal’s LNG exports during the first half of the year as buyers sought extra LNG ahead of the upcoming EU restrictions.

Sebastian Rötters, an energy campaigner at Urgewald, criticized the increase in imports as Europe continued to purchase Russian LNG as Moscow increased its attacks on Ukraine.

The EU plans to prohibit all remaining long-term Russian gas contracts beginning in January 2027.
