For a 60-litre tank of Special 95 that is roughly AED 12 more per fill-up than August. For the same tank of diesel it is about AED 30 more.

The UAE Fuel Price Committee raised petrol and diesel rates for September 2026, effective 1 September. Petrol repeats August’s move almost exactly, another AED 0.20 on every grade. Diesel does not: it climbs AED 0.50 in a single month, which is the story of this announcement and the reason a diesel driver’s September will feel very different from a petrol driver’s.

How much is petrol in the UAE in September 2026?

These rates take effect on 1 September 2026 and hold across all seven emirates until the next monthly review:

Fuel grade

September 2026

August 2026

Change

Super 98

AED 3.80

AED 3.60

up AED 0.20 (5.6%)

Special 95

AED 3.69

AED 3.49

up AED 0.20 (5.7%)

E-Plus 91

AED 3.61

AED 3.41

up AED 0.20 (5.9%)

Diesel

AED 4.30

AED 3.80

up AED 0.50 (13.2%)

Special 95 at AED 3.69 is the second-highest petrol price of 2026, behind June’s AED 3.83. Diesel at AED 4.30 is the third-highest of the year, just under June’s AED 4.33 and still below the AED 4.69 of April and May. VAT of 5 percent is already included in every figure.

Why did diesel rise so much more than petrol?

The committee’s announcement attributes the change to prevailing trends in global energy markets and does not break the move down grade by grade, so anyone offering you a precise reason for the diesel figure specifically is filling in a blank. What can be said is the market backdrop and the pattern in our own table.

On the backdrop, oil has been volatile through a six-month conflict with US and Iran tensions unresolved. Brent and WTI spiked to roughly USD 126 and USD 119 a barrel in late April, fell back when ceasefire talks emerged, then rebounded through August with Brent above USD 94 and WTI at USD 87. UAE pump prices follow that average with roughly a one-month lag, which is why September rises at all.

On the pattern, diesel moving on its own schedule is not new this year. In April, petrol rose about 32 percent while diesel rose about 72 percent. Petrol and diesel have moved by the same amount in only one month of 2026, and that was August. September simply returns diesel to its usual habit of swinging harder in both directions.

The diesel gap has doubled

The number worth carrying away is the gap between diesel and Special 95, because it decides how much more a diesel vehicle costs to run than the equivalent petrol one:

Month

Special 95

Diesel

Diesel premium

January 2026

AED 2.42

AED 2.55

AED 0.13

February 2026

AED 2.33

AED 2.52

AED 0.19

March 2026

AED 2.48

AED 2.72

AED 0.24

April 2026

AED 3.28

AED 4.69

AED 1.41

May 2026

AED 3.55

AED 4.69

AED 1.14

June 2026

AED 3.83

AED 4.33

AED 0.50

July 2026

AED 3.29

AED 3.60

AED 0.31

August 2026

AED 3.49

AED 3.80

AED 0.31

September 2026

AED 3.69

AED 4.30

AED 0.61

The premium held at AED 0.31 through July and August, and September doubles it to AED 0.61, the widest since June. If you drive a diesel SUV, pickup or van, that is the line in your budget that actually moved this month.

What the September rise costs you at the pump

On Special 95, the increase is the same size as last month’s:

A 60-litre fill-up now costs about AED 221, against roughly AED 209 in August. A 90-litre SUV tank is roughly AED 332. Both are up on August, though still under June’s fills of about AED 230 and AED 345.

“How far will that tank take me?” That depends on the car far more than on the month. Multiply the tank size by the car’s real-world kilometres per litre. September heat still works against you: air conditioning and idling in traffic eat range faster than any AED 0.20 move does.

“Do I have to bring it back full?” That is the rental company’s fuel policy, not the pump price, so check the fuel line on your agreement before you drive off. Collected full means returned full, and refuelling charges added afterwards usually cost more than filling it yourself.

What it means if you rent or buy a car

Fuel is one of the biggest running costs of owning a car, and a month where one fuel moves twice as hard as the others is a useful prompt to check which one you are actually buying.

If you rent: nothing about September changes the sensible playbook on petrol. Customers still choose on rental price, space and comfort first, and fuel economy only starts deciding the pick on long road trips or rentals that run into weeks or months. If you are booking a diesel vehicle for a long job, though, price the fuel line at AED 4.30 rather than at what you paid in August.

If you are buying used: the diesel premium is the thing to think about, not the headline petrol number. A diesel pickup or SUV was AED 0.31 a litre dearer to fuel than a petrol equivalent two months ago and is AED 0.61 dearer now, and this year has already shown that gap swinging between AED 0.13 and AED 1.41. Budget it as a variable rather than as today’s figure. Our guides to used cars under AED 100,000 and GCC vs non-GCC spec are the practical places to start.

The honest read: a single month’s move, in either direction, should not decide a car purchase. Buy for the car and your real usage, and treat fuel as the monthly variable it clearly is this year.

Frequently asked questions

What is the petrol price in the UAE right now?

From 1 September 2026, Special 95 is AED 3.69 per litre, Super 98 is AED 3.80, E-Plus 91 is AED 3.61, and diesel is AED 4.30. These are the same across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates.

Did petrol prices go up or down in September 2026?

Up. Every petrol grade rose by AED 0.20 per litre compared with August, about 5.6 to 5.9 percent depending on grade. Diesel rose by AED 0.50, about 13 percent.

Why is diesel so much more expensive than petrol in September 2026?

Diesel is AED 4.30 against AED 3.69 for Special 95, a premium of AED 0.61 that doubled from AED 0.31 in August. The committee does not publish a grade-by-grade explanation, and diesel has moved on a different schedule from petrol for most of 2026: in April it rose about 72 percent while petrol rose about 32 percent.

When do UAE petrol prices change?

The UAE Fuel Price Committee sets rates at the start of each month, and they stay fixed until the next review. So the September rates hold until the October announcement.

Is it cheaper to fill up in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Neither. UAE fuel prices are set nationally each month, so a litre of Special 95 costs the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and every other emirate. What changes your total is the grade: on a 60-litre fill, Super 98 costs about AED 6.60 more than Special 95 at September rates.

Is September 2026 the highest petrol price of the year?

No. Special 95 at AED 3.69 is the second-highest of 2026, behind June’s AED 3.83. For diesel, AED 4.30 is third behind the AED 4.69 of April and May.

See the full year at a glance: our UAE petrol prices 2026 tracker keeps every month’s rates and the next-month outlook in one place.

Rephrase in a different way as if you were a native American speaker as a content creation expert and do not talk about yourself or your experience in the text and do not show yourself as an artificial intelligence who wrote and fill the bullet point in the topic and speak the heart of the topic itself and dont take date of blog in ther first and dont take text like box of newsliter subscribe on post from content and romove all linke insert in content and and remove all affiliate disclosure phrases on content like this “This post may contain Amazon or other affiliate links that allow us to earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
