While presenting its financial results for August 2026, <\/span>Qantas announced plans to accelerate the retirement of its iconic Airbus A380-800s,<\/b> part of its fleet since <\/span>September 2008<\/b>. The <\/span>original withdrawal plan for the A380s <\/b>was set to be completed in <\/span>2032<\/b>, but it will be brought forward by four years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main factors behind this decision were the <\/span>conflict in the Middle East<\/b>, which caused fuel costs to rise sharply and kept the price of aviation fuel highly volatile, and the <\/span>inherent disadvantages <\/b>of operating four-engine aircraft. This volatility had a direct negative impact of <\/span>420 million Australian dollars <\/b>on the airline\u2019s operating profit for its fiscal year. Furthermore, operating <\/span>four-engine<\/b> aircraft <\/b>with an <\/span>average age <\/b>of <\/span>17 years <\/b>became operationally unsustainable due to both surging fuel prices and an expensive supply chain, accelerating the <\/span>transition toward new wide-body aircraft entering the fleet.<\/b><\/p>\n

Starting in <\/span>March 2028<\/b>, Qantas will begin phasing out its Airbus A380-800s, with the<\/span> last scheduled flight of the \u201cSuper Jumbo\u201d expected to take place by mid-year.<\/b> Beyond operating costs and variables outside the airline\u2019s control, Qantas has opted for an early retirement of the fleet now that it has full certainty regarding its delivery schedule, specifically for the new Airbus A350-1000ULRs slated for Project Sunrise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Qantas <\/b>holds <\/span>firm orders <\/b>for <\/span>36 wide-body aircraft<\/b>, comprising <\/span>12 Airbus A350-1000ULRs<\/b>, <\/span>12 <\/b>standard <\/span>Airbus A350s<\/b>, <\/span>four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners<\/b>, and <\/span>eight Boeing 787-10<\/b> Dreamliners<\/b>. Currently, the Qantas board of directors is in talks to exercise options for an additional <\/span>20 wide-body aircraft,<\/b> split equally between <\/span>Airbus <\/b>and <\/span>Boeing<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This story began nearly 26 years ago,<\/b> more precisely on <\/span>November 29th, 2000.<\/b> The Australian airline had announced the addition to its fleet of Airbus\u2019s new project, known today as the Airbus A380\u2014the <\/span>Airbus A3XX.<\/b> It was a historic decision for Qantas, which at that time operated a long-haul fleet consisting exclusively of Boeing 747-400 aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

A month later, Qantas signed the contract, formalizing the purchase of <\/span>12 aircraft <\/b>and<\/span> becoming the<\/span> first international customer to sign a binding agreement with Airbus for this model.<\/b> The <\/span>airline operated 12 Airbus A380s until just before the pandemic,<\/b> having previously ordered <\/span>eight additional units<\/b>, which were ultimately canceled in <\/span>2019<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>January 25th<\/b>, <\/span>2008<\/b>, the <\/span>Airbus A380-842 with serial number 014<\/b> made its maiden flight. Manufactured in <\/span>Toulouse <\/b>and initially assigned the French test registration <\/span>F-WWSK<\/b>, the <\/span>aircraft departed <\/b>for <\/span>Sydney nine months later<\/b>. Bearing the Australian registration <\/span>VH-OQA,<\/b> it became the first <\/span>Airbus A380 <\/b>to <\/span>join <\/b>a <\/span>oneworld member airline<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aircraft arrived at <\/span>Sydney\u2019s Kingsford Smith Airport<\/b> on the afternoon of <\/span>September 21st<\/b>, coming from <\/span>Toulouse <\/b>via <\/span>Singapore<\/b>. Following its arrival, the <\/span>\u201cNancy-Bird Walton\u201d <\/span><\/i>was welcomed by government authorities, the airline\u2019s executives, the press, and guests. It entered regular service on <\/span>October 20th<\/b>, <\/span>2008<\/b>, on the <\/span>Melbourne\u2013Los Angeles<\/b> route.<\/span><\/p>\n

Qantas <\/b>concluded <\/span>2008 <\/b>with <\/span>three Airbus A380-800s<\/b> in its fleet, after completing the delivery of the aircraft registered as <\/span>VH-OQB<\/b> and <\/span>VH-OQC<\/b>.The airline expanded its fleet in <\/span>2009 <\/b>with <\/span>two <\/b>additional aircraft (<\/span>VH-OQD<\/b> and<\/span> VH-OQE<\/b>), followed by another pair in <\/span>2010 <\/b>(<\/span>VH-OQF <\/b>and <\/span>VH-OQG<\/b>). The initial order of <\/span>12 Super Jumbos <\/b>was completed in <\/span>2011<\/b>, when <\/span>VH-OQH, VH-OQI, VH-OJJ, VH-OQK<\/b>, and<\/span> VH-OQL<\/b> officially joined the fleet.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a <\/span>result of the COVID-19 pandemic<\/b>, the airline temporarily grounded <\/span>its entire Airbus A380s fleet<\/b>, gradually <\/span>resuming operations as of 2022<\/b>. Two aircraft (<\/span>VH-OQE <\/b>and <\/span>VH-OQF<\/b>) were <\/span>permanently retired from service in March 2020<\/b> and ferried to <\/span>Victorville <\/b>in <\/span>June <\/b>and <\/span>July 2020<\/b>, respectively. Both are <\/span>currently partially scrapped.<\/b><\/p>\n

At the time of publication, <\/span>Qantas has nine operational Airbus A380-800s,<\/b> with the <\/span>VH-OQJ <\/b>aircraft temporarily grounded. All of its <\/span>A380s are configured for 485 passengers<\/b> in four classes (<\/span>14<\/b> seats <\/b>in <\/span>First<\/b>, <\/span>70 <\/b>in <\/span>Business<\/b>, <\/span>60 <\/b>in <\/span>Premium Economy<\/b>, and <\/span>341 <\/b>in <\/span>Economy<\/b>). The two retired aircraft had a capacity of <\/span>484 passengers <\/b>(14 seats in First, 64 in Business, 35 in Premium Economy, and 371 in Economy).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

For several years, <\/span>Qantas has based its entire Airbus A380-800 fleet at Sydney\u2019s Kingsford Smith Airport,<\/b> deploying them on <\/span>key long-haul corridors to Africa,<\/b> Asia<\/b>, <\/span>North America<\/b>, and <\/span>Europe <\/b>via <\/span>Singapore<\/b>. The <\/span>United States <\/b>remains its <\/span>primary market <\/b>in terms of weekly frequencies and capacity, followed by high-demand routes to <\/span>Singapore<\/b>, the <\/span>United Kingdom<\/b>, and <\/span>South Africa<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>February 23rd<\/b>, the Airbus A380-842 with registration number <\/span>VH-OQA<\/b> departed from <\/span>S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s Guarulhos Airport<\/b> in <\/span>Brazil <\/b>bound for <\/span>Sydney<\/b>, operating flight <\/span>QF308.<\/b> Initially, the schedule included a technical stop in <\/span>Auckland<\/b>, but the flight from <\/span>S\u00e3o Paulo <\/b>to <\/span>Sydney <\/b>was finally <\/span>operated nonstop<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Puerto Rican singer <\/span>Bad Bunny chartered <\/b>this <\/span>Qantas Airbus A380 <\/b>to transport his crew from <\/span>Brazil <\/b>to <\/span>Australia<\/b>, as the South American leg of his \u201c<\/span>DeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS<\/b>\u201d world tour transitioned toward Oceania.
