Brent crude is approaching $90 per barrel, while attacks on commercial vessels and stalled U.S.–Iran negotiations have increased concerns about Middle East energy supplies. At the same time, rising U.S. inventories and weaker demand expectations are limiting the market’s upside.

Brent crude futures settled at $88.52 per barrel on Friday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate closed at $82.40. Brent gained around 6% over the week and WTI approximately 5.4%, demonstrating the influence geopolitical developments continue to have on energy prices.

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the outlook. The waterway handles roughly 20% of global oil flows, meaning even partial disruption can have significant consequences. Recent attacks on commercial vessels and reduced shipping activity have intensified concerns. Even without a complete closure, persistent security risks can increase insurance premiums, freight costs and transportation delays, effectively raising the cost of supplying international markets.

“The ongoing tensions in the Middle East have rattled global energy markets, with no clear signs of a ceasefire in sight,” says Li Xing Gan, Financial Markets Strategist at Exness. “This has driven oil prices higher. On August 17, Brent crude futures rose 55 cents from the previous close, while WTI crude gained 17 cents amid continued diplomatic uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.”

U.S.–Iran tensions are another important source of uncertainty. Oil prices rose after Washington threatened to maintain its naval blockade of Iran indefinitely, while stalled negotiations reduced expectations of a quick resolution. Further tanker attacks, restrictions on Hormuz traffic or military escalation could increase the geopolitical premium in crude prices. Conversely, credible diplomatic progress could rapidly remove part of that premium.

Supply concerns also extend beyond the Middle East. Global oil supply reached approximately 101.5 million barrels per day in July but remained around 6.3 million barrels per day below year-earlier levels. Meanwhile, Russian seaborne oil-product exports dropped 33.3% in July from June on a daily basis following Ukrainian drone attacks that forced unplanned maintenance at several refineries.

However, the outlook is not uniformly bullish. U.S. crude inventories increased by 17.4 million barrels to 424.4 million barrels in the week ending August 7, the largest weekly increase since January 2023. Both OPEC and the International Energy Agency have also lowered their expectations for oil demand in 2026. These factors have prevented geopolitical tensions from producing an uninterrupted rally.

A sustained rise in oil prices could also have wider consequences for inflation and monetary policy. Higher crude prices eventually feed into transportation, logistics, manufacturing and consumer costs. This is particularly important in the United States, where softer inflation and weaker retail sales have reduced expectations of an immediate Federal Reserve rate increase. A prolonged energy shock, however, could raise inflation expectations and give policymakers less flexibility to ease financial conditions.

Currency markets could also be affected. Higher oil prices can support currencies of major energy exporters by improving trade balances and government revenues, while energy-importing economies face higher costs. The U.S. dollar could benefit if higher oil prices strengthen inflation expectations and encourage the Federal Reserve to maintain restrictive monetary policy, potentially pushing Treasury yields higher.

The effect on equities is similarly uneven. Energy producers and oilfield-services companies can benefit from higher crude prices, while airlines, transportation businesses, manufacturers and consumer-facing companies may face higher costs and weaker household spending. The broader impact will depend on whether the current increase proves temporary or develops into a prolonged energy shock.

The immediate outlook will depend heavily on developments around the Strait of Hormuz, U.S.–Iran negotiations and commercial shipping activity. Traders will also need to monitor U.S. inventories, Russian exports, Middle East production and global demand.

Oil is therefore caught between two powerful forces: geopolitical and physical supply constraints on one side, and elevated inventories and weaker global consumption expectations on the other. Further escalation could support crude prices and energy equities while increasing inflation concerns and influencing interest-rate and currency expectations. A diplomatic breakthrough or further deterioration in demand could quickly reverse part of the rally.

With Brent approaching $90, the Strait of Hormuz under pressure and U.S.–Iran tensions unresolved, oil is likely to remain an important source of volatility across global financial markets in the weeks ahead.

Rephrase in a different way as if you were a native American speaker as a content creation expert and do not talk about yourself or your experience in the text and do not show yourself as an artificial intelligence who wrote and fill the bullet point in the topic and speak the heart of the topic itself and dont take date of blog in ther first and dont take text like box of newsliter subscribe on post from contentand romove all linke insert in content and and remove all affiliate disclosure phrases on content like this “This post may contain Amazon or other affiliate links that allow us to earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
