Such a romantic place to be, according to many. Many who have never been there. Casablanca is a bewildering jungle – and after more than a decade of living in it, I can tell you it runs on rules that are known by everyone yet written nowhere. Every real Casaoui knows them 🙂

If you’re a tourist, consider this your insider’s cheat sheet: the things NOT to do in Casablanca, learned the hard way so you don’t have to.

🚶

Skip the Guesswork with a Local Guide

If navigating Casablanca solo feels like a lot, a guided walking tour handles the logistics for you and shows you the real city — no queue-jumping or taxi confusion required.

 See Casablanca Walking Tours →

From $15/person · Medina + Habous Quarter + food tastings

1. Never expect paperwork to be done properly and on time

The inchallah syndrome invaded all public offices and institutions in the city long ago. Whatever they promise, add a week. Then add another. More about opening a company and applying for a residency permit here. Take your time, be patient, and be prepared for everything.

2. Never wage war with the parking guys

Every street in Casablanca has one: the self-appointed guardian in a fluorescent vest (or not even that) who materializes the moment you park. Yes, it’s a made-up job. No, you won’t win. The few dirhams buy you peace, an extra pair of eyes on your car, and occasionally heroic help squeezing out of an impossible spot. Refuse, and they will curse and chase you – unless you speed up 😛

3. Never go out during the Wydad-Raja derby

The mother of all rules. When Casablanca’s two giant football clubs play each other, the city transforms. A very useful tip: park your car in a garage that evening. Apply the rule and thank me later.

4. Never try to take someone’s taxi

If you see a person struggling to catch a red petit taxi for twenty minutes without success, stand in front of them and try to catch their taxi. See their reaction. (Don’t actually do this.) Catching a taxi here is a skill with its own hand-signal language and etiquette – I’ve covered how taxis work in Morocco and the full field guide to Casablanca’s taxi driver personalities.

5. Never expect people to respect the queue

An annoying habit, yet widely cultivated. Very often a meaningful look is enough, but some individuals will still pretend not to see anything wrong about materializing directly in front of you at the bakery 😉

6. Never arrive expecting the movie

Here’s the secret nobody tells you: Casablanca (1942) was filmed entirely in Hollywood. Rick’s Café? Built in 2004 for tourists who came looking for it. If you arrive expecting misty romance and piano bars, the honking traffic will correct you within minutes. Come instead for what the city actually is – my honest verdict is in Is Casablanca Worth Visiting?

7. Never see only the mosque and leave

The Hassan II Mosque is magnificent and you should absolutely go. But most visitors see it, shrug, and catch the next train out – missing the Habous quarter’s arcades and olive merchants, the crumbling Art Deco glory downtown, and Mers Sultan’s old cinemas and café culture.

8. Never plan to walk everywhere

On the map, the mosque, the medina and Maarif look close together. They are not. Casablanca is enormous, sidewalks come and go, and summer sun is merciless. Embrace the tram and the little red taxis – that’s what they’re for. (Choosing where to base yourself helps too: here’s my guide to Casablanca’s neighborhoods.)

9. Never mistake big-city bustle for danger

Casablanca’s chaos can feel intimidating on day one – the noise, the traffic, the intensity. But hectic is not the same as unsafe: this is a working city where millions of people go about their lives, and with normal big-city awareness you’ll be fine. The full honest picture, including the areas where you SHOULD be careful, is in my guide to safety in Casablanca.

Break a rule or two and Casablanca will forgive you – Casaouis have seen it all.
