Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said Saturday that Morocco had anticipated Russia\u2019s veto of the US-sponsored Sahara resolution but deliberately chose not to seek changes to the draft, arguing that the resulting diplomatic impasse opened a new phase in the dispute.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a special interview broadcast on 2M, Bourita said Morocco had been aware of Moscow\u2019s position before the Security Council vote and had decided against weakening the resolution to secure its adoption.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did not ask Russia to reverse its position,\u201d Bourita said, referring to Moscow\u2019s opposition to the American proposal.<\/p>\n

He said Morocco\u00a0 had pursued a strategy involving a double veto, ultimately preventing the adoption of either the American or Russian draft resolutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone must bear responsibility for their own actions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Addressing the consequences of MINURSO\u2019s mandate not being renewed, Bourita said Morocco would cooperate with the United Nations to facilitate the mission\u2019s departure rather than forcibly expel its personnel.<\/p>\n
He said Rabat would provide the necessary time and logistical assistance for the withdrawal, while maintaining that the mission\u2019s original purpose had become obsolete.<\/p>\n
Bourita also distinguished the mission\u2019s departure from Morocco\u2019s commitment to the ceasefire established in 1991.<\/p>\n
\u201cMorocco supports the ceasefire and respects it. This has been Morocco\u2019s position since 1991, and it remains so today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the commitment of a responsible state. Every state is responsible for its own actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked whether the failure to renew MINURSO\u2019s mandate risked pushing the Sahara dispute into uncharted territory, Bourita dismissed concerns about uncertainty.<\/p>\n
\u201cMorocco will never venture into the unknown,\u201d he said, citing confidence in King Mohammed VI\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a country with firm principles, leadership and a sense of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said Moroccans\u2019 confidence in their institutions enabled the country to transform challenges into opportunities.<\/p>\n
Bourita also indicated that Morocco\u2019s diplomatic objective extended beyond MINURSO\u2019s departure toward bringing the Sahara dispute to a definitive close within the United Nations framework.<\/p>\n
