They promise to enhance connectivity between small towns and cities, capturing the imagination of many investors who believe this technology is the future of transportation.

However, significant challenges remain. Capital is a critical factor, and Lilium, a German startup, is now facing financial hurdles despite raising $1.1 billion since 2021. The company plans to file for insolvency and seek government-supervised restructuring, indicating a high risk of bankruptcy or closure if it cannot secure further funding.

Lilium’s financial issues stem from its inability to attract additional investments, despite ongoing efforts to do so. The company sought a €50 million loan from the German government, which was recently denied.

### A Challenging Journey

Lilium is working on an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed to carry six passengers. The venture is resource-intensive, requiring extensive research and development, design, prototype manufacturing, testing, certification, and scaling up for production—all before any revenue can be generated. Most companies in this space, including Lilium, predict they won’t start flying commercial passengers until at least 2026.

Other startups are experiencing similar financial struggles. Joby Aviation recently raised $500 million and is seeking an additional $202 million through a public stock offering. Meanwhile, Vertical Aerospace teetered on the brink of financial collapse before its CEO injected $50 million of his personal funds.

### Lilium’s Financial Landscape

Founded in 2015 by engineers from the Technical University of Munich, Lilium went public in September 2021 via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), raising $584 million at a $3.3 billion valuation. It has since raised an additional $525 million, becoming one of the most funded travel startups in recent years. Notable partnerships include agreements with Honeywell Aerospace, BlackRock, and others.

Despite these efforts, Lilium’s stock has suffered significantly, dropping 75% over a two-day period. The company, which boasts over 1,000 employees, has established flight network agreements with various organizations and is positioned to launch operations in multiple regions, including Italy, Paris, and Florida.

As the quest for flying taxis continues, Lilium’s current situation highlights the intense financial demands of this ambitious industry.

Flying taxis have the potential to transform urban commuting, cutting travel time from 90 minutes to just 7.
