The prehistoric heritage of Essaouira took center stage during an international workshop held Wednesday at the sociocultural space \u201cDar Souiri\u201d, to celebrate two decades of archaeological research in this culturally rich region.<\/p>\n
Organized by the National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage (INSAP), in partnership with the University of Arizona and Aix-Marseille University, and n coordination with the Provincial Directorate of Culture, Essaouira-Mogador Association, and the Local Development Corporation Essaouira Culture, Arts, and Heritage (SDL. ECAP), the workshop showcased the latest findings from excavations at key sites such as Bizmoune and Jorf El Hamam, alongside other exploratory efforts in the surrounding area.<\/p>\n
Under the theme \u201cThe Origins of Essaouira: 20 Years of Archaeological Research,\u201d the event shed light on the lifestyles, migrations, and interactions of prehistoric populations in Essaouira.<\/p>\n

INSAP Director Abdeljalil Bouzouggar highlighted the program\u2019s achievements over the past two decades, which have identified over 300 archaeological sites in Essaouira province, compared to just 30 when the initiative began.<\/p>\n
Among the most remarkable discoveries are the world\u2019s oldest known ornamental objects, found in Bizmoune Cave and dating back 142,000 to 150,000 years. Additionally, flint tools and evidence of human presence near Essaouira date back nearly one million years, extending our understanding of human history in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese discoveries reveal Essaouira\u2019s ancient legacy, showing its critical role not only in Morocco\u2019s history but in humanity\u2019s as well,\u201d Bouzouggar emphasized, adding that the workshop also serves to inspire and support the next generation of researchers, particularly doctoral students, by encouraging them to share their findings with the public.<\/p>\n
Jacques Collina-Girard, geologist and prehistorian from Aix-Marseille University, delivered a presentation titled \u201cThe Strait of Gibraltar: A Migration Hub Between Europe and Africa,\u201d highlighting its pivotal role in the prehistoric migration of humans and animals, fostering essential cultural and biological exchanges.<\/p>\n
Collina-Girard highlighted that discoveries in Essaouira, including ornaments from Bizmoune Cave, illustrate the region\u2019s importance in broader prehistoric exchanges across the Mediterranean and North Africa, showcasing its role as a historical crossroads.<\/p>\n
\u201cMorocco is a treasure trove for prehistoric archaeology, with incredibly rich sites across the country,\u201d he said, underscoring the Kingdom\u2019s contribution to understanding human history and its strategic role in facilitating cultural exchanges between Africa and Europe.<\/p>\n
Steven Kuhn, anthropology professor at the University of Arizona, focused on research conducted in Bizmoune Cave, explaining the methods used to date stratigraphic layers and reconstruct thousands of years of human activity, he outlined the timeline of discoveries, emphasizing periods of significant human activity linked to ornaments and flint tools that reflect the evolving cultural and technical practices of prehistoric populations.<\/p>\n
Young researchers from the United States and France contributed by sharing studies on the ecological and climatic conditions of prehistoric times, shedding light on how ancient populations adapted to environmental changes and developed survival and mobility strategies across Essaouira province.<\/p>\n
The two-day workshop features sessions on themes such as \u201cGeoarchaeology and Lithic Resource Use at Bizmoune,\u201d \u201cStone Tools and Landscape Use During the Middle Stone Age,\u201d \u201cComplex Behavior of Homo sapiens in North Africa,\u201d and \u201cLandscape and Climate in Essaouira During the Middle and Late Pleistocene,\u201d among others.
