From fragrant saffron and cardamon in balaleet, to a piping hot dallah \u2013 a traditional long-spouted pot \u2013 brimming of chai karak or gahwa, these spices are a staple of Qatari culture.<\/p>\n<p>But what histories lie behind herbs like sage and mint, and the aromatic seeds and spices that once journeyed from distant lands to Doha\u2019s coasts?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a new trade at all,\u201d Astrid Kensinger, Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University \u2013 Qatar (VCUarts) and Chair of Graphic Design at the institute\u2019s (IN)&gt;Tangible Lab research cluster, told Doha News. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about a history that\u2019s thousands of years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Island of Hormuz, often referred to as the region\u2019s \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/41367670\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener\">entrep\u00f4t port<\/a>,\u201d played a critical role in facilitating ancient trade routes. <\/p>\n<p>Roughly 6,000 years ago, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cabi.scienceconnect.io\/api\/oauth\/authorize?ui_locales=en&amp;scope=affiliations+login_method+openid+settings&amp;response_type=code&amp;redirect_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cabidigitallibrary.org%2Faction%2FoidcCallback%3FidpCode%3Dconnect&amp;state=XcJMw9nXC8YYvhF7SglEJQa_Qftj3f8QmI37FeU-8zI&amp;prompt=none&amp;nonce=31xvVZANeXGw7ehW8NbS08kuj6bD5cMhqtFP%2BHrtZnY%3D&amp;client_id=cabi\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener\">Tigris\u2013Euphrates river system<\/a>, which empties into the Arabian Gulf, was first used to transport copper from the Ergani mines in Anatolia to the Sumerian settlements in southern Iraq.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-doha-news-qatar wp-block-embed-doha-news-qatar\"\/>\n<p>By 3,000 BC, the Mesopotamians had established maritime routes extending from the Arabian Gulf to the Indus Valley\u2013the latter region spanning modern-day Pakistan and northwest India.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, spices like pepper, cardamon, and ginger began arriving from India. Spices brought by Arab traders from India were also bartered for seeds and herbs. They eventually made their way into Central and Northern Europe through trading hubs like Alexandria, Tyre, Venice, and Genoa.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-proud-of-your-stories\"><span id=\"be-proud-of-your-stories\"><strong>\u2018Be proud of your stories\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Last November, Downtown Msheireb\u2019s Liwan Design Studios and Labs held a multifaceted open event that transformed the historical grounds into a hub for cultural and creative expression.<\/p>\n<p>Inviting visitors to engage with Qatar\u2019s history of spices, the lineup included the \u2018Kitchen Comics\u2019 exhibition. It showcased the final works of 17 students who took an elective course led by Astrid Kensinger, and Leland Hill, Principal Investigator of the Comics Lab at VCUarts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe researched Qatar\u2019s oral and living histories with spices and used art and design with our students to visualise or translate these stories into heritage features,\u201d Kensinger told Doha News.<\/p>\n<p>Natasha Fernandes, the exhibition\u2019s curator and exhibition designer, also noted that the showcase gives the students a platform to share the olfactory memories from their parents and families and share with the wider community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpices are small, everyday items locked away in our kitchens. However, our students dug deep and uncovered not only the local memories behind their chosen spices, but also the surrounding historical context,\u201d Fernandes said.<\/p>\n<p>For Shaikha Al Hajri, one of the participating students, her project on cloves aimed to bridge her Bedouin heritage with modernity.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shaikha Al Hajri (pictured left) explored cloves to bridge her Bedouin heritage with modernity. Suleiman\/Doha News. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to show the evolution of the Qatari kitchen through the spice itself,\u201d she explained, adding that her project is a nod to her background by representing her grandfather\u2019s <em>khaima<\/em> (tent) and her design of a desert lizard character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy granddad was thrilled and supported me throughout this project, especially seeing how I was holding on to our cultural roots,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Al Hajri\u2019s coursemate, Noora Al Ibrahim, whose project focused on sage, told Doha News that an air of mystery surrounds how the spice first entered Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many different stories about this,\u201d she added. \u201cFor my mother, she was first introduced to sage as a natural remedy for women.
