Argentina said Wednesday it will pull out of the World Health Organization, following in the footsteps of the United States\u00a0and citing similar complaints over the UN body\u2019s management of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
President Javier Milei\u2019s spokesman announced the decision two weeks after President Donald Trump, an ideological ally and hero of the Argentine leader, announced Washington\u2019s planned exit from the agency.<\/p>\n
Milei\u2019s decision was based on \u201cdeep differences regarding health management especially during the pandemic,\u201d spokesman Manuel Adorni told reporters, adding Argentina would not \u201callow an international body to interfere in our sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cited the \u201clongest lockdown in the history of humanity\u201d and \u201ca lack of independence (at the WHO) in the face of the political influence of some states,\u201d without naming names.<\/p>\n
Adorni insisted the measure gave Argentina \u201cgreater flexibility to implement policies adapted to the context\u201d locally, while ensuring \u201cgreater availability of resources.\u201d<\/p>\n
WHO data shows Argentina contributed some $8.75 million in membership fees to the organization across 2022 and 2023 \u2014 0.11 percent of the total budget.<\/p>\n
It is slated to contribute $8.25 million for the two-year 2024\/25 cycle.<\/p>\n
The vast majority of the United Nations health agency\u2019s budget comes from voluntary contributions, however, and Argentina has made none in recent years.<\/p>\n
Adorni said Argentina \u201cdoes not receive funding from the WHO, so this measure does not represent a loss of funds for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last year, Argentina refused to join a new pandemic protocol drawn up by the WHO and gave notice of its intention to withdraw from the agency altogether.<\/p>\n
A statement from the president\u2019s office, issued after Adorni\u2019s briefing, elaborated on the decision.<\/p>\n
It claimed the WHO had \u201cpromoted endless quarantines without scientific basis\u201d as the world battled the Covid-19 pandemic, which claimed millions of lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quarantines caused one of the greatest economic catastrophes in world history,\u201d the presidency said.<\/p>\n
Self-declared \u201canarcho-capitalist\u201d Milei is an avowed fan of Trump, who signed an order within hours of his January 20 inauguration for the United States to withdraw from the WHO, which he has also criticized for its handling of the pandemic.<\/p>\n
Washington was the biggest contributor to the Geneva-based organization, which Trump claimed had \u201cripped us off,\u201d and the US withdrawal leaves global health initiatives short of funding.<\/p>\n
Since taking office in December 2023, Milei has gutted public spending, having vowed to maintain a zero budget deficit after years of overspending.<\/p>\n
His austerity measures are estimated to have tipped millions more people into poverty, but the country also recorded its biggest-ever trade surplus in 2024 \u2014 partly due to an import and spending slump.<\/p>\n
Milei was the first foreign leader to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate after the Republican\u2019s November US election victory.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
