Gerard Larcher, President of the French Senate, reaffirmed France\u2019s unwavering support for Morocco\u2019s sovereignty over the Sahara on Monday, praising the \u201cRoyal Atlantic Initiative\u201d as a crucial contributor to regional stability.<\/p>\n

Larcher made his remarks following a meeting with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, in Rabat. He highlighted that while relations between Morocco and France had faced challenges, they have now returned to the right path, thanks to the leadership of both countries and the role of parliamentary diplomacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new chapter in our relationship, following French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s visit, reflects our shared history and deep friendship, dating back to the time of Mohammed V and Charles de Gaulle,\u201d Larcher said. \u201cWhile we faced difficulties, we are now on the right track thanks to the determination of our leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larcher also emphasized the importance of cooperation on the \u201csouthern Atlantic front,\u201d a key symbol of stability for both Africa and the world.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Larcher is scheduled to hold separate talks with Abdel Salam Bekrar, Governor of La\u00e2youne-Sakia El Hamra, and will meet with Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, Mayor of La\u00e2youne, and Sidi Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of the Regional Council.<\/p>\n

The French delegation will visit major social and economic projects in the region, underscoring Paris\u2019 commitment to supporting local development in Morocco\u2019s southern provinces. During the visit, Larcher will lay the foundation stone for a new French school in La\u00e2youne, followed by a tour of the French Cultural Association, reflecting the strengthening of educational and cultural ties between Morocco and France.<\/p>\n

Larcher reiterated France\u2019s stance on the Sahara issue, stating that the support for Morocco\u2019s autonomy plan, initiated in 2007, reflects the position of the French Republic, not individual governments.<\/p>\n
