The 30th International Book and Publishing Fair kicked off Friday in Rabat with a range of compelling panels spotlighting Sahrawi performing arts, the protection of personal data, and the urgent voices of Palestinian poets from Gaza.<\/p>\n

Celebrating Sahrawi Performing Arts<\/h3>\n

In a panel dedicated to \u201cHassani Performing Arts\u201d, artists, critics, and directors convened to assess the cultural gains achieved in Morocco\u2019s Saharan regions. They emphasized the growing body of theatrical productions, television programming, and cinema emerging from the south, underlining the need for academic and critical engagement to elevate these art forms.<\/p>\n

Director Aida Boui highlighted the evolution of Sahrawi cinema, tracing its beginnings to the launch of Laayoune TV in 2004. \u201cThe theater was the nucleus,\u201d she said, \u201cpaving the way for audiovisual storytelling.\u201d Boui cited foundational works, including \u201cHodaj Al-Domoue\u201d by veteran filmmaker Hassan Kharr and \u201cArai Al-Doulma\u201d by Ahmed Bido, as early cinematic milestones.<\/p>\n

She stressed the importance of the 2015 creation of the Hassani Cinema Support Fund, though noted it remains insufficient. Boui credited the Desert Film Lab, led by filmmaker Hakim Belabbes and critic Hammadi Kairoum, for fostering a generation of directors and technicians, calling it \u201ca revolutionary incubator for Sahrawi cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite these advancements, Boui noted persistent gaps in technical and scriptwriting skills, calling for strategic partnerships to further professionalize the industry and support a transition from \u201cnomadic to urban\u201d storytelling.<\/p>\n

Actress and television star Aliya Touir echoed Boui\u2019s sentiment, recalling how Sahrawi drama transitioned from sketch-like series to full-fledged Ramadan productions in recent years. \u201cNow we see at least two series annually,\u201d she said, \u201cand the quality is improving across writing, performance, and production.\u201d Touir also highlighted the success of the 2016 sitcom \u201cImara 36\u201d, saying it marked a breakthrough in Sahrawi comedic television.<\/p>\n

Data Privacy in the Digital Age<\/h3>\n

Another pivotal session, hosted by Morocco\u2019s National Commission for the Control of Personal Data Protection (CNDP), focused on the urgency of protecting citizens\u2019 private information amid growing concerns over digital surveillance and data leaks.<\/p>\n

Commission member Mohamed Bouden reaffirmed the CNDP\u2019s mission to address citizen complaints, monitor institutional practices, and engage with media discourse. \u201cEvery individual harmed by data processing or leaks has the right to file a complaint,\u201d Bouden said.<\/p>\n

He underscored the threat posed by actors who exploit personal data for malicious purposes, emphasizing that \u201cthere is no freedom without security.\u201d Bouden also reiterated the CNDP\u2019s role in ensuring transparency, preserving citizens\u2019 rights, and supporting Morocco\u2019s investment climate by protecting business and banking data.<\/p>\n

The commission plans regional and sectoral outreach campaigns to raise public awareness and instill a culture of data protection nationwide.<\/p>\n

Poetry as Resistance: Voices from Gaza<\/h3>\n

A moving bilingual session unveiled \u201cIs There Life Before Death?\u201d, an anthology of poetry from Gaza curated by Moroccan poets Abdellatif La\u00e2bi and Yassine Adnan. Featuring works by 26 Palestinian poets, the anthology was published in Arabic by Dar Al-Rafidain in Beirut and translated into French by La\u00e2bi for \u00c9ditions Points.<\/p>\n

The anthology was conceived in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas-led incursion and the subsequent Israeli military campaign in Gaza. \u201cI felt paralyzed,\u201d La\u00e2bi said. \u201cFor the first time in over 50 years of writing, I had no words.\u201d<\/p>\n

Choosing to amplify Gazan voices rather than speak for them, La\u00e2bi and Adnan gathered poems under siege and across borders. Two poets included in the collection \u2014 Nour Eddine Hajaj and Refaat Al-Ar\u2019eer \u2014 were killed in Israeli strikes.<\/p>\n

Adnan described a meticulous process of sourcing authentic, urgent poetry, often via social media. \u201cWe rejected clich\u00e9 and easy sentiment,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wanted fresh, raw voices \u2014 poetry written in emergency, not for effect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the featured poets is Alaa Al-Qutrawi, whose four children were killed in Israeli bombardments. One of them, Orchidea, inspired a symphony composed by Lebanese musician Marcel Khalif\u00e9.<\/p>\n

As the session concluded, Adnan addressed Moroccan solidarity movements, rejecting the false dichotomy of \u201cTaza before Gaza.\u201d Instead, he affirmed, \u201cWe say Taza and Gaza, Marrakesh and Jericho \u2014 we live in plurality, and plurality is our foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Dynamic Start<\/h3>\n

The first day of this year\u2019s book fair showcased the power of literature, performance, and policy to reflect and shape cultural identity. From amplifying Sahrawi creatives and safeguarding citizen rights to honoring Palestinian resilience through poetry, the fair launched with a rich tapestry of voices and visions \u2014 setting the tone for a diverse and thought-provoking program ahead.<\/p>\n
