A French probe into alleged foreign interference and bias via the algorithm at Elon Musk-owned social network X is \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d, the company said in a post Monday, adding that it was refusing to cooperate.<\/p>\n
\u201cX believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,\u201d the social network said.<\/p>\n
It added that it \u201chas not acceded to the French authorities\u2019 demands\u201d to access its recommendation algorithm and real-time data, \u201cas we have a legal right to do\u201d.<\/p>\n

Cybercrime prosecutors announced the opening of the probe on July 11 into suspected crimes including manipulating and extracting data from automated systems \u201cas part of a criminal gang\u201d.<\/p>\n
The move followed two complaints received in January about \u201cforeign interference\u201d in French politics via X \u2014 one of them from Eric Bothorel, an MP from President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s centrist party.<\/p>\n
Bothorel had complained of \u201creduced diversity of voices and options\u201d and Musk\u2019s \u201cpersonal interventions\u201d on the network since his 2022 takeover of the former Twitter.<\/p>\n
The Tesla and SpaceX chief has raised hackles in Europe with political sallies, including vocal backing for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of February legislative elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cDemocracy is too fragile to let digital platform owners tell us what to think, who to vote for or even who to hate,\u201d Bothorel said after the investigation was announced.<\/p>\n
The company responded Monday saying, \u201cMr Bothorel has accused X of manipulating its algorithm for \u2018foreign interference\u2019 purposes, an allegation which is completely false.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prosecutors have not confirmed whether they are also investigating under a French law against foreign interference in politics passed last year.<\/p>\n
X also complained of bias in French authorities\u2019 choice of experts to examine its algorithm, including mathematician David Chavalarias and computer scientist Maziyar Panahi.<\/p>\n
Both have been involved in a scheme called \u201cHelloQuitteX\u201d, designed to make it easier for users to migrate their X presence to other social networks.<\/p>\n
Picking them \u201craises serious concerns about the impartiality, fairness and political motivations of the investigation\u201d, the company said.<\/p>\n
It also objected to the use of the \u201corganised gang\u201d aggravating circumstance.<\/p>\n
The characterisation \u201cis usually reserved for drug cartels or mafia groups\u201d and \u201cenables the French police to deploy extensive investigative powers\u2026 including wiretapping the personal devices of X employees,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
