Paro Airport <\/b>(PBH\/VQPR), <\/span>Bhutan\u2019s only international airport,<\/b> is located <\/span>6 kilometers from the city of Paro and 50 kilometers from Thimphu, the country\u2019s capital.<\/b> PBH is known as one of the most difficult airports in the world due to its location and challenging approach,<\/b> by either direction of the runway.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is located in a <\/span>valley at 7,332 feet, about 2,200 meters, above sea level, surrounded <\/b>by the<\/span> Himalayan mountains which oscillate<\/b> up to <\/span>18,000 feet, more than 5,000 meters.<\/b> The runway, with headings 04 and 22, is <\/span>2,265 meters long,<\/b> equivalent to just over <\/span>7,400 feet.<\/b> For their approach,<\/span> they must fly visually,<\/b> following <\/span>specific points and turning through the mountains until they find the runway and land<\/b>, usually <\/span>without the automatic landing system.<\/b><\/p>\n

Another factor that increases the difficulty of this airport is the<\/span> strong winds<\/b>, causing several flights to be diverted and\/or canceled. Only a <\/span>small number of pilots are allowed to operate in Paro due to these extreme conditions.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

With regard to carriers, all airlines currently operating to\/from Paro are <\/span>Bhutanese<\/b>, offering <\/span>domestic and international routes,<\/b> mainly with <\/span>Airbus H130, Airbus A319-100, Airbus A320-200, Airbus A320neo, and ATR 42-600 <\/b>aircraft<\/span>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Druk Air<\/b> (KB\/DRK), also known as <\/span>Royal Bhutan Airlines<\/b>, is <\/span>Bhutan\u2019s main airline and flag carrier,<\/b> managed by the <\/span>Royal Government of Bhutan,<\/b> which focuses its operations in <\/span>South Asia and the Middle East.<\/b> Bhutan Airlines<\/b> (B3\/BTN) is the other carrier <\/span>operating in Paro, the country\u2019s first private airline, <\/b>with <\/span>Kathmandu and Kolkata <\/b>being part of its <\/span>route network<\/b> from PBH\/VQPR.<\/strong> As well as Druk Air, it has <\/span>Airbus A319-100s<\/b> in its fleet, although the <\/span>country\u2019s flag carrier also has ATR 42-600s, Airbus A320s and helicopters. <\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>airport averages six flights per day<\/b>, with some days having <\/span>three or four <\/b>and others having <\/span>seven or eight<\/b>. <\/span>Druk Air,<\/b> besides being Bhutan\u2019s leading airline,<\/span> is the main operator in Paro,<\/b> as it has more than three daily flights. <\/span>Bhutan Airlines<\/b>, which does not have its aircraft based in Paro, sometimes operates only <\/span>one flight a day to PBH\/VQPR.<\/b><\/p>\n

Paro has about 42 weekly flights,<\/b> 31 <\/b>of which are operated by <\/span>Druk Air <\/b>and <\/span>11 <\/b>by <\/span>Bhutan Airlines<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to our database, <\/span>36 of these 42 weekly flights are international,<\/b> distributed among <\/span>Bangladesh<\/b>, <\/span>India<\/b>, <\/span>Nepal<\/b>, <\/span>Thailand, <\/b>and the <\/span>United Arab Emirates<\/b>. <\/span>Gelephu <\/b>(GLU\/VQGP), <\/span>Jakar Bathpalathang <\/b>(BUT\/VQBT), and <\/span>Trashigang Yongphulla<\/b> <\/b>(YON\/VQTY) are the domestic routes within <\/span>Bhutan <\/b>performed from\/to <\/span>Paro. <\/b><\/p>\n

Between <\/span>1994 and 2007<\/b>, <\/span>Druk Air <\/b>operated two <\/span>British Aerospace 146-100<\/b> aircraft. These were replaced by <\/span>Airbus A319-115<\/b> aircraft with registrations<\/span> A5-RGF<\/b> and <\/span>A5-RGG<\/b>, which were added to the fleet in <\/span>2004<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to aircraft,<\/span> Bhutan\u2019s flag carrier also has two helicopters in its fleet<\/b>, both <\/span>Airbus H130 T2 helicopters<\/b>, registered as <\/span>A5-BHU<\/b> and <\/span>A5-BHV<\/b>. The two were added in <\/span>2024<\/b>, with the first arriving in <\/span>Paro <\/b>on <\/span>July 1st <\/b>and the second at the <\/span>end of October.<\/b><\/p>\n

With its helicopters, Druk Air<\/b> operates<\/span> charter flights to remote villages<\/b>, <\/span>tourist flights, medical evacuation<\/b>, and <\/span>cargo transport <\/b>to <\/span>hard-to-reach areas<\/b>. These aircraft have two configurations, depending on the pilots flying them. With one pilot, they can carry six passengers, while with two pilots they can carry five passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n

As with its <\/span>Airbus A319, Airbus A320, <\/b>and <\/span>ATR 42-600 aircraft, <\/b>the <\/span>two Airbus H130 helicopters <\/b>are based at <\/span>Bhutan International Airport.<\/b><\/p>\n

In order to <\/span>operate at Paro International Airport,<\/b> one of Bhutan\u2019s four airports, <\/span>special certification and specialized training are required<\/b>. This includes <\/span>demonstrated knowledge of local geography, approaches to both runways, and landing procedures, as well as the ability to fly without autopilot.<\/b> It is estimated that around <\/span>50 pilots are qualified to operate at PBH.<\/b><\/p>\n

As reported by <\/span>Simple Flying<\/span><\/a>, to qualify for training, <\/span>pilots must have a minimum of 1,500 hours, more than 500 hours of mountain flying, and an Airline Transport (ATP) certificate.<\/b> After intensive training in flight simulators, conducted by the Royal Government of Bhutan in conjunction with Bhutan Airlines, qualified pilots will be able to operate in Paro without supervision following 30 takeoffs and landings.<\/span><\/p>\n
