A real estate agency in the Spanish city of Mataró has been fined €10,000 for discriminating against a man of Moroccan origin, marking a precedent-setting case for housing rights in the Catalonia region.
The victim, identified as Hamid, a resident of Spain for 20 years, took action after facing repeated rejections from multiple agencies. The decisive evidence came when he recorded an agent claiming an apartment was “already rented,” despite it still being available on the market.
This proof led the Catalan government’s Office for Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination to impose the significant penalty.
Hamid had filed complaints against a total of 12 agencies. While nine cases were dismissed due to the statute of limitations, two other companies remain under investigation and could face similar sanctions.
The DESCA Observatory, a human rights group that brought the case to light, stated that the fine serves as a crucial warning to the real estate sector that rental criteria must be based on financial solvency, not race or religion.
