The increasing international support for the Moroccan Sahara underscores the inevitability of a political resolution to this regional dispute, anchored firmly in Morocco’s autonomy plan and its commitment to national sovereignty and territorial integrity, stated Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Friday.
Bourita emphasized the need for the United Nations to align its perspective with the realities on the ground. He highlighted that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal remains the definitive solution to the conflict, fully respecting the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. This message was reinforced during Bourita’s discussions with counterparts and senior officials from various countries at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, where he noted a shared commitment among many nations to support Morocco’s stance.
The support from Denmark, joining the ranks of those backing the Moroccan initiative, reflects a significant shift within Europe, with a total of 19 EU member states now endorsing this position. Bourita remarked that this trend illustrates a broader movement across the European continent in favor of Morocco’s autonomy plan.
