The National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage Sciences announced the discovery of new architectural remains near the ancient city of Volubilis, shedding light on military architecture in Roman Morocco.
In a statement, the Institute said a joint Moroccan-Polish mission identified two watchtowers and a third tower next to a funerary monument known as a tumulus, an earthen mound surrounded by a circular ditch roughly 40 meters wide.
Fadwa Ben Jaafar, who led the Moroccan team, said the exact dating of the structures will follow an analysis of ceramic fragments found on site. She added that the find strengthens understanding of the Roman military system in the region and its defensive and funerary functions.
The discovery forms part of an ongoing archaeological research program led by the Institute to document Morocco’s historical heritage and preserve local cultural assets, contributing to both cultural tourism and academic study of ancient civilizations in North Africa.
