The World Bank is preparing to approve a $200 million results based financing package to help Morocco strengthen its capacity to manage natural disasters and climate shocks, targeting protection of people, infrastructure and territory.
Morocco is among the most climate exposed countries in the MENA region, with annual losses estimated at more than 0.6 percent of GDP, largely driven by floods that cause about $450 million in damage each year. Rapid urbanization is amplifying risks, as cities concentrate population, assets and economic activity.
The program will focus on five priorities: safeguarding critical infrastructure, integrated flood management, nationwide early warning systems, support for city level resilience planning, and better risk data. It builds on reforms launched since 2017, when the country revamped its disaster governance framework and created a dedicated national directorate.
