Spanish greenhouse tomato growers earn significantly less than their Dutch counterparts, but substantially more than producers in Morocco and Turkey, according to data compiled by Hortoinfo using FAOSTAT figures from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
The report highlights wide disparities in production costs and profit margins across the European and North African tomato markets. In 2024, Spanish greenhouse tomato producers were paid about 61 percent less than Dutch growers, while earning roughly 300 percent more than Moroccan producers and 111 percent more than Turkish farmers.
FAOSTAT data show that Moroccan tomato growers received an average of €0.16 per kilogram in 2015, rising slightly to €0.19 in 2024, keeping them at the lowest returns among the compared countries.
In Spain, greenhouse tomato prices increased from €0.57 per kilogram in 2015 to €0.76 in 2024, according to Andalusia’s Observatory of Prices and Markets. However, when total production is included, including tomatoes grown for processing, FAO data show a much smaller increase, from €0.33 per kilogram in 2015 to €0.34 in 2024, the latest year available for farm-gate price data.
Dutch tomato growers saw average prices rise from €0.73 per kilogram in 2015 to €1.95 in 2024, highlighting a much more profitable market. In Turkey, farm-gate prices remained stable at €0.36 per kilogram in both 2015 and 2024.
