Iberdrola Spain is incorporating new pioneering cutting-edge equipment at the Llanos de Quart substation, located in the Quart de Poblet industrial estate in Valencia, which was seriously damaged by the severe storms caused by the DANA.
The planned intervention consists of raising the entire platform where the new infrastructure is being installed by more than 1.5 metres. This ‘will adopt a compact design, a technical and structural improvement that converts a traditional outdoor electrical substation into a smaller, more efficient and modern version, part of which will be located inside prefabricated modules’, as Iberdrola pointed out.
These are “the new Integrated High Voltage Assemblies (CIAT), 66 kilovolts and weighing more than 30 tonnes each, with an area of approximately 40 m2 per unit, which are the first that the company has installed worldwide, formed with pioneering technology that incorporates the switching equipment inside the infrastructure, thus providing a more orderly environment with less visual impact,” as reported by Iberdrola.
Ayesa Martínez, Head of Project Engineering at Iberdrola Spain, highlighted that the compaction of the substation through the new Integrated High Voltage Centres ‘will allow for a much more compact infrastructure, with greater capacity for future expansions by freeing up space on the site thanks to the use of this pioneering technology’.
For Ignacio García Bosch, head of the il·lumina plan, ‘the project being carried out at the Llanos de Quart substation involves an investment of over €7 million and incorporates the most advanced digitalisation standards, which will benefit users of the industrial estate and nearby towns.’
García Bosch also emphasises that the new CIATs are built on elevated foundations, ‘which increases their resilience to the effects of possible DANAs, as the most sensitive elements are located about two metres above the original level and protected inside the building.’
Il·lumina plan: €100 million for the electricity network affected by the DANA
This intervention in Llanos de Quart is included in the il·lumina plan.
This initiative by Iberdola Spain envisages an investment of €100 million to refurbish the electricity grid damaged by the DANA that affected various parts of the Valencian Community, leaving a new and more resistant grid in place with the latest standards in terms of modernisation and digitalisation.
To carry this out, the company has formed a specific team of 35 professionals dedicated exclusively to this project, which also requires the collaboration of around 1,000 operators from contracting companies, mainly from the area. Together, these actions will benefit more than 650,000 users in the area, as recognised by Iberdrola.
