The documents to sell a car in the UAE make a shorter list than their reputation suggests. Sellers routinely arrive at the counter with folders of photocopies; the RTA’s own list for a standard Dubai transfer is a handful of items, and most of them are now electronic. What actually stalls sales is a missing release or certificate, not a missing photocopy.
Here is the complete list for each emirate, on both sides of the deal.
Selling in Dubai
The seller needs:
- Original, valid Emirates ID. Your identity, signature and traffic file hang off it, whether you transfer online through UAE Pass or at a counter.
- The vehicle registration card, the Mulkiya. If it is lost, request a replacement before you start the transfer.
- Nothing else, provided the car is clear: no outstanding fines in any emirate and no active bank mortgage on the vehicle.
The buyer needs:
- Valid Emirates ID.
- Electronic insurance in their own name. UAE motor policies run 13 months, twelve of cover plus a one-month buffer that matches the registration grace period.
- A passing technical inspection certificate. The test applies to every ownership change, even for cars under three years old, and the certificate is valid for 30 days.
- A GCC-specification compliance document where applicable, and the electronic mortgage release if the buyer is financing.
- A Dubai traffic file; opening a new one costs AED 200.
In the RTA’s online flow, the sale and purchase agreement is generated and signed electronically by both parties, so there is no paper contract to draft. If you prefer a counter transaction at a Customer Happiness Centre or a registration centre such as Tasjeel, both parties or their legal representatives attend in person.
If the car has a loan on it: the bank’s electronic mortgage release is the one document that cannot be improvised. Dubai’s clearance system is connected to 89 banks and finance companies; once you settle the loan, the lender updates the RTA directly and you receive an SMS confirmation, typically within a few working days.
Selling in Abu Dhabi
The transfer runs through TAMM and Abu Dhabi Police rather than the RTA, and the document list adds one item worth planning for:
- Seller: Emirates ID and the registration card, with fines settled.
- Buyer: Emirates ID, plus a 13-month insurance policy in their own name or a formal insurance transfer letter, and the inspection where required.
- A mortgage release or transfer letter if the vehicle is financed.
The light-vehicle transfer fee in Abu Dhabi matches Dubai at AED 350, with heavier categories priced above it.
Selling in Sharjah
Sharjah transfers happen at Tasjeel centres or through the federal Ministry of Interior channels. The document list mirrors Dubai: Emirates ID on both sides, the registration card, cleared fines, insurance in the buyer’s name and the inspection. Published figures for the Sharjah transfer fee vary between roughly AED 300 and AED 400 depending on channel and plate choice, so confirm the exact amount at the counter or in the app before you go.
Selling through someone else, or from abroad
If you cannot attend, a representative can sell on your behalf with a vehicle Power of Attorney:
- Arranged inside the UAE: signed before a court notary, which Dubai offers by video call as well as in person.
- Arranged from abroad: sign at a UAE embassy, or notarise locally and have the document attested through your foreign ministry and the UAE embassy. A legal Arabic translation by a UAE Ministry of Justice-registered translator is mandatory.
The POA should explicitly cover transferring ownership, receiving the sale proceeds, settling fines and renewing registration if needed. Budget several hundred dirhams and around a week before your representative can act.
Company-owned cars transfer under the corporate variant of the same RTA service; expect to add the trade licence and authorised-signatory documents to the list above.
The pre-sale checklist
Five minutes before you list the car, confirm:
- Emirates ID valid, not expired.
- Mulkiya in hand, or replacement ordered.
- Fines at zero, in every emirate.
- Loan settled or settlement figure requested from the bank.
- Tyres within the five-year age rule, so the inspection does not fail on a technicality.
With those five in order, the transfer itself is the easy part, often same-day. The full process, fees and the insurance refund most sellers forget are covered in the step-by-step selling guide and the itemised cost breakdown. Pricing the car first? Start with what your car is worth in 2026.
Buying rather than selling? The mirror-image checklist is in the documents required to buy a used car in the UAE.
When the folder is ready, list your car on OneClickDrive and meet serious buyers.
