Morocco posted strong investment performance in 2025, as foreign direct investment flows into the kingdom nearly doubled, while Moroccan investments abroad also grew.
According to the “World Investment 2026” report, published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this is an indicator of the improved attractiveness of the local economy and the increased presence of Moroccan companies in international markets,
The report notes that direct investment flows into the country increased by 91% during 2025 to reach $3.3 billion, compared to more than $1.74 billion the previous year, despite the ongoing uncertainty dominating the global economy and geopolitical tensions.
The cumulative balance of foreign direct investment in Morocco grew by 25.2%, exceeding $80,800 million
Furthermore, the contribution of foreign direct investment to gross fixed capital formation in the Kingdom rose to 7.5% last year, up from 4.2% the previous year, reflecting its growing role in financing productive investments and supporting economic growth.
The report revealed that the cumulative stock of foreign direct investment in Morocco grew by 25.2%, exceeding $80,800 million, equivalent to 48.7% of gross domestic product, thereby reinforcing the country’s position as one of the most stable destinations in North Africa.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), headquartered in Beirut, attributed this result to Morocco’s success in diversifying its economic base and focusing on value-added industries, particularly the automotive and manufacturing sectors, as well as the ongoing development of infrastructure and improvements to the business climate.
The Stellantis automotive manufacturing project, valued at approximately $1.5 billion, was included on the list of the ten largest initial investment projects announced in Africa in 2025.
The report also highlighted the “Sila Atlantic” renewable energy project, which aims to connect North Africa with Europe via undersea power transmission lines.
The report’s authors noted that this project strengthens Morocco’s position as a strategic partner in Europe’s energy transition and enhances its ability to attract clean energy investments.
Economist Idris Al-Fina stated that “macroeconomic and institutional stability, the maintenance of financial and monetary balances, along with the diversification of the economic model, have strengthened investor confidence in the Moroccan economy.”
Speaking to “Al-Arab,” he added that “reforms related to the Investment Pact will help boost foreign investment flows in the coming years, with the potential to reach even higher levels if Morocco continues to expand its exports and open up to new markets, which will help reduce the trade deficit.”
These results are consistent with data from the Moroccan Foreign Exchange Office, which showed an increase in net foreign direct investment flows to approximately $2.59 billion by the end of last May, representing a 41.8% increase compared to the same period the previous year.
The Office specified that foreign investment inflows rose by 20%, reaching approximately $3.32 billion, while outflows fell by 22.5%, to about $724 million.
Idris Al-Fina: Macroeconomic and institutional stability, the maintenance of financial and monetary balances, and the diversification of the economic model have strengthened investor confidence in the economy
Meanwhile, Moroccan investments abroad continued to show significant growth, as outward investment flows increased by 19.4% over the past year to reach $813 million.
Likewise, the cumulative balance of Moroccan investments abroad rose to over $12,650 million, equivalent to 7.6% of gross domestic product.
Statistics also show that the value of business establishment projects launched by Moroccan companies outside the country rose by 69.1%, reaching approximately $474 million, reflecting the expansion of Moroccan investors’ presence in international markets.
Cross-border mergers and acquisitions performed well, with Morocco’s net sales totaling $169 million, compared to a net loss of $811 million in 2024.
Net purchases by Moroccan investors abroad through these transactions surged by 244.9%, reaching approximately $199 million.
Data from the Foreign Exchange Office also revealed that net Moroccan direct investment flows abroad reached approximately $520 million during the first five months of 2026, compared to about $240 million recorded during the same period the previous year.
Al-Fina believes that continued coordination between the public and private sectors, as well as accelerated investment in infrastructure and in less-developed areas, will strengthen the competitiveness of the Moroccan economy and broaden the productive base, which will support sustainable growth and consolidate the country’s position as a regional investment destination in the coming years.
