Qatar Airways has decided to roll back its recent hike in surcharges for award redemptions after customers voiced their frustrations over unexpected fees on popular routes. This change primarily affected travelers using Avios points, even though the number of points needed for flights remained unchanged.
The airline had initially labeled these increases as “fuel surcharges,” but they were later rebranded as “booking fees.” The price increases were significant, with booking fees to London rising by over 94% and fees for trips to New York climbing by more than 128%.
Many customers were taken aback by this silent adjustment, especially those who only learned of the new fees after gathering enough Avios points to redeem for flights.
In response to the backlash, Qatar Airways Privilege Club has revised its reward fees policy for redeeming award flights. Starting Monday, the airline will transition from a sector-based model to a distance-based pricing structure. This change will lower reward fees for many popular short and medium-haul routes by up to 15% or maintain the same rates. However, fees for longer routes will increase in line with the distance.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the initial rollout of the new fee structure. They stated that the displayed reward fees for award flight bookings were unintentionally higher than intended but have since been corrected to align with the updated policy.
