Nelson Mandela’s Grandson Denied Entry to the UK for Pro-Palestine Speaking Tour
Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela, the grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, has been reportedly denied entry to the United Kingdom ahead of a speaking tour dedicated to advocating for the Palestinian cause. The event was intended to take place in several cities, including London, Edinburgh, and Brighton, in conjunction with Black History Month.
Despite originally being informed that a visa was not necessary due to his South African government passport, Mandela received last-minute communication that he would, in fact, require one. This change of information forced him to participate remotely in a scheduled Sheffield event. Efforts by prominent African National Congress (ANC) members to secure his visa have so far been unsuccessful.
During the Sheffield event, Mandela remarked on the obstacles he faced, stating, "It seems that there are those who are intent on preventing me from being physically with you in Britain." He has faced criticism for his remarks in support of Palestinian resistance and has previously expressed admiration for controversial figures, including the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
The UK Home Office has been under scrutiny over the decision regarding Mandela’s visa. A representative emphasized that the UK maintains stringent criteria for granting entry, ensuring that visas are issued only to individuals deemed welcome in the country.
While Mandela has faced challenges entering the UK, he is slated to visit Dublin later this month, where reports indicate that the visa requirement will be waived. His grandfather, Nelson Mandela, was a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause, continuing the legacy of activism within the family.
