Labour Party members undermine Starmer just a day after he called for unity within the party.

Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has formed an exceptionally compact cabinet, consisting of just three members, effectively addressing his pledge to streamline governance.

Leading the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (People’s Liberation Front) and the National People’s Power alliance, Dissanayake officially took office on Monday after his victory in Saturday’s election.

On Tuesday, he appointed his small cabinet, consisting of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and lawmaker Vijitha Herath, while also dissolving parliament to pave the way for fresh elections scheduled for November 14.

Political analysts suggest this three-member cabinet is a response to both political and legal pressures. Since Dissanayake’s party, the NPP, previously earned the people’s mandate, he felt compelled to create a cabinet representative of that election outcome.

The dissolution of parliament means that existing ministers continue to serve in an interim capacity. However, Dissanayake chose to form this minimalist cabinet rather than filling positions with members from other parties, showcasing his commitment to the electorate’s will.

Sri Lanka faces ongoing challenges stemming from a severe economic crisis and strict austerity measures tied to an IMF bailout, making Dissanayake’s leadership crucial during this turbulent period.

The president has taken on significant roles, including overseeing defense, finance, economic development, and numerous other critical sectors.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya, an academic and activist, will manage areas such as justice, health, education, and trade, while Herath will handle foreign affairs, environment issues, and infrastructure.

Political commentator Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka remarked on the necessity of Dissanayake’s approach, noting his commitment to reducing the traditional structure of government, which often included many more cabinet positions.

Following the parliamentary elections in mid-November, a more extensive and representative cabinet will be established, with the interim three-member cabinet remaining in charge with the support of civil servants in the meantime.

The president’s appointments are expected to resonate with the public, particularly with the choice of Amarasuriya as prime minister, viewed positively due to her academic background and leadership experience.
