Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, an Oscar winner, has been appointed to lead the jury for the upcoming 21st Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM 2024), happening from November 29 to December 7, 2024. His jury will present the prestigious Étoile d’Or award to one of the 14 debut and sophomore feature films competing in the international category, highlighting the talents of emerging filmmakers from around the world.
Vinterberg regards this opportunity as “an immense privilege,” particularly in a time when festivals like Marrakech play a vital role in amplifying diverse voices in cinema.
Renowned in European film circles, Vinterberg first gained widespread recognition with his 1998 film “Festen,” which earned the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His bold storytelling often explores complex human themes. In 2020, he garnered significant accolades when his film “Drunk” took home the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. A graduate of the Danish National School of Cinema, he co-founded the influential Dogme 95 movement alongside Lars von Trier, which revolutionized narrative filmmaking.
Throughout his impressive career, Vinterberg has directed critically acclaimed films such as “The Hunt” (2012), “Far from the Madding Crowd” (2015), and “The Commune” (2016). In addition to his film work, he has received recognition for his contributions to theater and has collaborated with renowned musical acts like Blur and Metallica.
