British MP Fabian Hamilton says the relationship between the UK and Morocco is growing stronger and shouldn’t be limited to just supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara.
In an opinion piece published on Politics.co.uk , Hamilton called Morocco a “trusted and smart ally,” highlighting the country’s key role in fighting terrorism, human trafficking, and countering Russian influence in the Sahel region.
Hamilton, who co-chairs the UK’s cross-party parliamentary group on Morocco, said that after the recent visit by Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Rabat, the partnership between the two countries is no longer just about diplomacy. It now delivers real benefits for British citizens too.
Following that visit, the UK ramped up its investment support for Morocco. The UK Export Finance agency allocated an additional £5 billion to back new business projects in Morocco, with British firms expected to play a major role in building infrastructure for the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host.
Health is also a key area of cooperation. Hamilton noted that British pharmaceutical and medical companies will benefit directly from Morocco’s ongoing health system reform plan, which is valued at nearly £2 billion.
This opens new opportunities in pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and health tech.
On the issue of Moroccan Sahara, Hamilton sais that the UK’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan aligns with the stance of other allies like the US, France, and Spain.
He acknowledged that it wasn’t an easy decision, but a necessary one to help bring lasting peace and protect the rights of local populations.
He underlined that the UK’s recent position marks a major diplomatic shift, one that indirectly recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the southern provinces.
It also reflects growing international confidence in the autonomy plan as the only realistic solution to the conflict.
The MP said that this stance adds to the momentum Morocco is gaining on the global stage, as more influential countries express support for its proposal, while outdated separatist narratives continue to lose ground.
Hamilton said that the UK-Morocco relationship is built on shared goals of development and conflict prevention, and it should continue to deepen, well beyond the issue of Sahara.
