U.S. President Donald Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, a decision he signed in December 2020 during the final days of his first term.
In a letter to King Mohammed VI coinciding with the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne, President Trump underscored that the United States continues to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed territory “as the only basis for a just and lasting settlement of this conflict.”
“I look forward to continuing our cooperation to strengthen stability, security and peace at the regional level,” the US President wrote.
Political analysts say the timing of the message underscores its symbolic weight and reflects the strength of the strategic partnership between Washington and Rabat.
A historic affirmation
Hassan Belouane, an international relations analyst, called the letter “a historic turning point” in U.S.-Morocco relations.
“It goes beyond standard protocol to reaffirm the strength and uniqueness of bilateral ties,” Belouane told Hespress, noting that the renewed support comes amid shifting regional and global dynamics.
Belouane said the move highlights the success of Morocco’s diplomatic push under King Mohammed VI, which he believes has brought the Sahara dispute closer to a final settlement.
“The timing, the occasion, and the extraordinary tone of the letter all suggest that international actors, including Morocco, are working toward a peaceful resolution that safeguards everyone’s interests, as the king emphasized in his recent speech,” he said.
Credibility and realism
Mohamed Neshtawi, a professor of international relations and law at Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, said the letter sends “a strong political signal” by renewing U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty and support for its autonomy proposal.
He called it “the result of sustained Moroccan diplomacy” that has preserved and reinforced Washington’s stance, especially with President Trump now serving his second term.
Neshtawi said the position demonstrates the depth of the U.S.-Morocco strategic partnership and Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s role as a trusted ally in promoting security and stability regionally and globally.
“This renewed commitment removes any ambiguity around the U.S. position,” he said, adding that it affirms the credibility and seriousness of Morocco’s proposal.
According to Neshtawi, the message also reflects “a clear American desire to deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen shared security,” based on Morocco’s stability and strategic location.
