Beijing fired back on Tuesday at President Donald Trump’s expanding tariff war, vowing to match US economic pressure with its own countermeasures. A top Chinese official warned that China would “fight to the end” if the US refused to back down from the trade war, ABC News reported.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters that the latest round of US tariffs “does not reflect any willingness to have a serious dialogue.” He accused Washington of “bullying” and undermining negotiations and slammed the tariffs as a sign of disrespect.
“If the United States really wants to talk, it should adopt an attitude of equality, respect, and reciprocity,” Lin said.
President Trump made it clear Monday that he’s not backing off. When asked whether he would consider pausing the tariffs to allow for talks, Trump flatly said, “We’re not looking at that.” He added that several countries have already approached the US to negotiate new trade deals.
Trump also threatened to veto a bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate that would require congressional approval before any new tariffs take effect. On top of that, he warned that more tariffs could be slapped on China in response to Beijing’s retaliatory measures announced last week.
According to a senior White House official, the administration plans to add another 50% tariff on top of existing ones. Combining last week’s 34% hike with the earlier 20% tariffs, that would raise the total rate on some Chinese goods to a staggering 104%.
China quickly condemned the move. Lin said that if the US insists on escalating the fight, “China will definitely resist it to the end.” He called the US stance “protectionism” and warned that there are “no winners in the trade war and the tariff war.”
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce echoed that sentiment, labeling the US tariffs “groundless” and accusing Washington of engaging in “typical unilateral bullying practices.” In a statement, the ministry urged the US to cancel all tariff measures and resolve differences through “equal dialogue based on mutual respect.”
China also warned that it will take all necessary steps to protect its interests. “Pressure, threats, and blackmail are not the right way to deal with China,” Lin said.
The development comes at a time when global markets are reeling from the aftermath of Trump’s decision to start a trade war with the rest of the world. Since Trump rolled out the new tariffs on Wednesday last week, the global stock market has lost an eye-watering USD 6 trillion in capital.
