ABU DHABI, May 20: The UAE has strongly condemned an attack targeting the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, with senior officials describing it as a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional and global stability.

Dr Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, said on Wednesday that the targeting of the peaceful Barakah facility by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq represents a “dangerous indication” of escalating regional threats.

In a post on X, Gargash said the incident reflects broader instability stemming from weak state structures and violations of international law, including provisions of the Geneva Conventions and United Nations Security Council resolutions. He also linked the attack to wider regional tensions, including threats to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

He described the strike as a “deliberate criminal act” and warned that such actions extend risks beyond the Gulf region to the global economic and security system.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that any attack on nuclear facilities such as Barakah poses serious risks to nuclear safety.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi told the United Nations Security Council that the agency is closely monitoring the situation and remains in continuous contact with regional governments.

Grossi praised UAE authorities for their cooperation and timely sharing of technical information, stressing the importance of immediate reporting and engagement with the IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre during any nuclear-related incident.

He added that the agency will continue to issue public updates on the impact of the conflict on nuclear sites, including potential health and environmental consequences, while maintaining close coordination with member states.
