Traffic violations in the UAE often lead to black points on your driving license. While minor fines may not affect you immediately, accumulating too many black points can result in serious consequences such as license suspension or even vehicle confiscation. If you’re wondering how to remove black points from license in UAE, this guide will walk you through the legal and practical ways to clear your record and protect your driving privileges.
What Are Black Points in the UAE?
Black points are penalties given to drivers who commit traffic violations under UAE law. Each violation carries a set number of points, usually ranging from 2 to 24. Once a driver reaches the maximum of 24 points, the license can be suspended or even revoked.
For example:
-
Minor speeding = 4 black points.
-
Dangerous driving or reckless overtaking = up to 12 points.
-
Driving under the influence = 24 points (immediate suspension).
It’s important to note that black points are tied to your traffic file, not just your physical license card. This means even if you renew your license, the points remain active until they expire or are legally removed or reduced through official programs.
The black points system was introduced to promote road safety and accountability. With thousands of cars on UAE roads daily, it ensures reckless drivers face stricter action while responsible drivers are rewarded with a clean record.
Proven Ways to Remove Black Points from License in UAE
1. Attend Traffic Awareness and Safe Driving Courses
The most effective way to remove black points from license in UAE is by enrolling in traffic awareness programs offered by Dubai RTA, Abu Dhabi Police, or Sharjah Police.
These courses usually cover:
-
Defensive driving skills.
-
Accident prevention strategies.
-
The importance of seat belts and child car seats.
-
Dangers of speeding, tailgating, and distracted driving.
After completing the course, drivers can have up to 8 black points removed depending on the emirate and violation type. Apart from reducing points, these sessions help drivers improve their habits, making roads safer for everyone.
2. Join Government Campaigns
Another way to remove black points from license in UAE is by participating in special government initiatives. A well-known example is the “Accident-Free Day” campaign.
How it works:
-
Register online through the MOI portal or your emirate’s traffic department.
-
Drive responsibly on the campaign day without committing any violations.
-
Earn up to 4 black points removed automatically.
These campaigns are often advertised widely across UAE media. Staying updated can help you take advantage of such opportunities.
3. Automatic Expiry After One Year
Black points have a validity of 12 months from the date of violation. If you avoid further violations during this period, the points automatically expire.
Example:
This method to remove black points from license in UAE requires patience and discipline but costs nothing, just safe driving.
4. Clear Outstanding Fines First
While paying fines does not directly remove black points from license in UAE, it is often a required step before applying for removal programs.
For example:
-
If you received both a fine and black points for speeding, you must first pay the fine.
-
Only then can you enroll in a driving course or campaign.
This ensures accountability and prevents drivers from skipping monetary penalties while only seeking point reduction.
5. Contact Traffic Authorities Directly
If you are close to reaching the 24-point limit, contact your emirate’s traffic authority. Each emirate has slightly different procedures for black point reduction:
-
Dubai: Reach out to Dubai Police or RTA for awareness courses.
-
Abu Dhabi: Police frequently offer rehabilitation courses for point removal.
-
Sharjah & Others: Check through the MOI portal or local police stations.
Authorities may also shorten license suspension if drivers cooperate and join corrective programs.
How to Check Your Black Points
Before you begin the process to remove black points from driving license in UAE, you should know your black point status. Here’s how:
- Dubai: Visit the RTA website or use the RTA app.
- Abu Dhabi: Use the Abu Dhabi Police website or app.
- Other Emirates: Check via the Ministry of Interior (MOI) portal.
By entering your license number or traffic file number, you can instantly see your active black points and any associated fines.
Why Removing Black Points Matters
Clearing your black points isn’t just about avoiding license suspension. It has several additional benefits:
- Lower insurance costs: Many insurance companies in the UAE consider your driving record when calculating premiums. Fewer black points often mean cheaper rates.
- Employment security: For professions that require driving (delivery drivers, taxi drivers, chauffeurs), a suspended license could lead to job loss.
- Peace of mind: Driving stress-free without worrying about additional penalties makes your time on the road safer and more enjoyable.
Moreover, the UAE takes road safety very seriously. By maintaining a clean record, you also contribute to safer roads for everyone.
Additional Consequences of Reaching 24 Black Points
If you accumulate 24 black points within a year, your driving license will typically be suspended. The duration of suspension can vary:
- First-time offenders: The license may be suspended for 3 months.
- Repeat offenders: Suspension periods increase with each offense, up to a possible license cancellation.
In serious cases, such as reckless driving or driving under the influence, you may also face vehicle confiscation, court appearances, and heavy fines.
This makes it critical to monitor your black point status and take proactive measures to reduce it before reaching the limit.

Fortunately, they are not permanent and can be reduced through awareness courses, special government campaigns, or simply by driving safely over time. By staying informed about your current black point status, paying off any outstanding fines, and actively engaging in safe driving initiatives, you can keep your record clean and protect your driving privileges. Ultimately, the best way to remove black points from license in UAE is to prevent them altogether by practising responsible driving every day.
