Moroccan-Senegalese mobility startup Weego raised USD 1.1 million in a funding round led by Azur Innovation Fund to expand across Morocco and prepare for growth in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, the company said, Next African reported.
Weego operates a digital platform that connects public and private transportation into one system. Users can plan, book, and track trips in real time. The app integrates buses and trams with taxis and other private services. The company says it wants to improve coordination across existing networks rather than compete with them.
The 2020 startup, founded by Saad Jittou and Mor Niane, plans to use the capital to grow in more Moroccan cities and strengthen its transportation management services for businesses.
“Transportation is the primary obstacle to economic activity in our cities,” said Saad Jittou, co-founder and CEO. “By 2030, our metropolitan areas will have to manage unprecedented passenger flows. […]This funding enables us to accelerate this vision in Morocco and begin our regional expansion.”
Traffic congestion weighs on economic activity in major African cities. Casablanca ranks among the continent’s most congested urban centers. Long commutes cut into productivity, drive up business costs, and disrupt daily work schedules.
Morocco seeks to strengthen its position as a regional business hub by 2030. Urban mobility plays a central role in that effort. Companies in large cities deal with daily transportation delays that affect employees and operations.
Weego targets corporate clients as a core part of its business model. The company offers transportation management tools that help businesses organize employee commuting. Executives say structured coordination reduces downtime and improves efficiency.
At the same time, Weego serves individual commuters through its consumer app. This dual model supports diversified revenue and broader market reach.
Azur Innovation Fund backed the round as an early-stage investor focused on high-growth startups. The funding provides resources to scale technology and expand city by city.
African cities continue to grow at a rapid pace. Demand for reliable urban transportation increases each year. Weego predicts that digital coordination, not new infrastructure alone, will drive the next phase of mobility reform.
