- More than two decades promoting equality through sport
Iberdrola Spain continues to strengthen its commitment to equality through sport. The electricity company has added handball player Nicole Wiggins to its Iberdrola Ambassadors programme, which comprises a selection of 35 athletes and role models who promote the visibility and leadership of women in sport and whom it seeks to give as much exposure as possible in the media and on social networks.
Nicole Wiggins’ sporting career
Nicole plays in goal and stands out for her rapid progress and solidity between the posts.
Trained at Club Balonmano Base Villaverde, she took a major leap in her career when she joined KH-7 Granollers in 2019, where she established herself over four seasons. Her excellent performance led to her debut in the 2022 European Championship as an emergency replacement after injuries to the starting goalkeepers, Silvia Navarro and Mercedes Castellanos. In the championship, she became a key player for the Guerreras, with whom she also won gold at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran.
In 2023, she began her international career with OGC Nice Handball in the French league, gaining competitive experience before returning to Spain in 2025. She currently plays for Super Amara Bera Bera, one of the most prominent clubs in the Guerreras Iberdrola League. At national team level, she has participated in major events such as the European Championships, the Pre-Olympic Tournament and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where she has stood out for her character, leadership and sporting maturity despite her youth.
Nicole Wiggins’ testimony as an Ambassador
Being an Iberdrola Ambassador is a great motivation to continue giving my best and trying to inspire more women and young people. Women’s sport is a diamond in the rough, and Iberdrola Spain is one of the few companies that dares to polish it, as demonstrated by the support it has given to many female athletes over the last decade. Their commitment and the effort and dedication of many sports professionals are breaking down many of the walls that surround us and making it increasingly possible for us, as athletes, to focus solely on what happens on the pitch, said Wiggins.
Nicole Wiggins thus joins the family of Iberdrola Ambassadors, made up of sports leaders such as Alexia Putellas, Teresa Perales, Carolina Marín, María Pérez, Adiaratou Iglesias, Loida Zabala, Ana Peleteiro, Paula Leitón, Sofía Val and Paula Badosa, among other women from the elite of national sport.
Since 2016, Iberdrola Spain has been the main promoter of women’s sport. It currently supports 35 national federations through its sponsorship and lends its name to more than 100 competitions. Thanks to its commitment, over the last decade it has contributed to an increase of more than 80% in the number of female members of these federations, bringing the total to almost 820,000.
Handball is one of the sports that has gained the most media coverage thanks to the company’s support in recent years. The Liga Guerreras Iberdrola, in particular, has become one of the most established competitions and, since the start of the sponsorship, has been broadcast live on Teledeporte once a week.
Every year, Iberdorla España presents the Iberdrola Supera Awards to recognise and raise awareness of the best projects launched in Spain to promote gender equality through sport. These awards, worth €50,000 for each winner, have the following categories: Supera Base, Supera Competición, Supera Inclusión, Supera Social, Supera Difusión and Supera Impulso Rural.
The electricity company’s support also extends to Paralympic sport. Since its creation in 2005, it has collaborated with the Spanish Paralympic Committee’s (CPE) Plan to Support Paralympic Sport (ADOP) with the aim of providing our athletes with the best conditions to carry out their preparation and participate in all competitions with a guarantee of success.
Likewise, Iberdrola Spain, through its Foundation and together with the CPE, offers Paralympic athletes who are beneficiaries of the ADOP Plan scholarships for university and postgraduate training. This collaboration agreement aims to facilitate the professional training of athletes with a view to their future integration into the labour market once their careers have ended.
Finally, it should be noted that the company is one of the partners in the Universo Mujer programme, a comprehensive initiative for the development and advancement of women in society that implements actions that contribute to social transformation through the values of women’s sport.
This initiative seeks to promote the development and inclusion of women in sport and society, establishing itself as a tool for social transformation in Spain through the values associated with women’s sport.
