Car registration in Sharjah costs AED 350 to renew a light vehicle and AED 400 to register one for the first time. A car three years old or more must pass a technical test first, and the light vehicle test is AED 150. Your insurance must be valid and your fines cleared before the system lets the renewal through.
Sharjah-registered cars run on Ministry of Interior (MOI) systems, not the RTA. So the MOI UAE app is where most people renew. If your car is registered in Dubai, our Dubai mulkiya renewal guide covers the RTA side instead.
The fees
These are the federal fees for a private light vehicle, set by the official fee schedule in Cabinet Resolution No. 30 of 2017. Check the total the app shows before you pay.
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Annual renewal, light vehicle | AED 350 | Cabinet Resolution No. 30 of 2017 |
| First registration, light vehicle | AED 400 | Cabinet Resolution No. 30 of 2017 |
| Technical test, light vehicle | AED 150 | Gulf News; The National (3 Nov 2026) |
| Ownership transfer, light vehicle | AED 350 | Cabinet Resolution No. 30 of 2017 |
| Fine for driving with expired registration | AED 500, 4 black points, and 7 days’ impound if expired more than 3 months | Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017 |
Authorities in each emirate can add service charges on top of the federal fee. Card delivery, plate and late renewal charges vary, so check the current fee in the app for those.

Renewing your mulkiya, step by step
- Clear your fines. Open fines block the renewal. You can pay them in the same app. Our guide to traffic fines in Sharjah lists the common ones.
- Check your insurance. The policy must be valid at the time of renewal. If you are switching insurer, do it before you start.
- Test the car if it is three years or older. Cars produced in the last three years are exempt. The result goes to the system electronically.
- Log in to the MOI UAE app with UAE Pass or your Emirates ID.
- Go to Traffic services, then Vehicle services, then Renew vehicle registration. Anything still missing (insurance, test or fines) shows as a restriction you must clear.
- Add a UAE delivery address and pay by card. You get a receipt, and the registration card is delivered.
In 2021, the MOI told Gulf News that renewal needs a valid UAE residency visa, passport and Emirates ID.
Where to do it
- MOI UAE app or the MOI website. The main channel for Sharjah cars.
- Emirates Vehicle Gate. Listed on u.ae as a registration channel.
- Testing and registration centres. Tasjeel runs 16 locations in Sharjah (as of June 2025), including Al Madam, Souq Al Haraj and Industrial Area 4. Shamil runs Shamil Al Ihsan in Al Siyouh, officially inaugurated by Sharjah Police in May 2025. You can test and renew in one visit.
If you go in person, take your old mulkiya and your insurance certificate. Insurers have desks at many centres. Heading to a centre in the city? Our Sharjah parking guide explains the paid zones and hours.

Our list of documents needed to buy a used car in the UAE covers what to collect from the seller.
Registering a used car you just bought
A new car from a UAE agency is registered by the agency. A used car is different: you do it.
- The seller starts the transfer. For a Sharjah car this is the MOI UAE app, under Traffic Services, then Ownership Transfer. The seller enters your traffic code number, and both of you confirm with codes sent by SMS.
- Get the car tested if it is three years or older.
- Buy insurance in your name.
- Pay the transfer fee and collect the mulkiya and plates, or have them delivered.
Buying from another emirate adds a step. The seller gets a vehicle transfer certificate first, and you register the car in Sharjah. Our guide to transferring a car between emirates walks through it, and our ownership transfer guide covers the rest.
Still choosing? Compare used cars for sale from dealers across the UAE before you commit.
If your car is leased or financed
A bank loan sits on the registration as a mortgage. When you register a mortgaged car, the mortgage must be added electronically.
Renewing is the same as for any car. Selling is not. You cannot transfer ownership until the bank releases the mortgage. Settle the loan and get the mortgage release or clearance letter. The bank usually removes the mortgage from the system electronically. A buyer can take over the loan only with the bank’s approval and a new loan agreement. Our used car loan guide explains how the finance side works.
If the car is leased, check your contract to see who handles the test and renewal before the expiry date arrives.
FAQ
Can I renew my Sharjah registration if my visa has expired?
Probably not. In 2021, the MOI told Gulf News that renewal needs a valid UAE residency visa, passport and Emirates ID. Check the app, as no newer statement has been published.
Can I renew a Sharjah-registered car in the RTA Dubai app?
No. The MOI says its app renews registrations in every emirate except Dubai, which runs on RTA systems. Sharjah cars use MOI channels.
How many cars can I register in my name from 2027?
Up to five. From 1 January 2027, Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 lets individual residents register two vehicles as standard and up to three more for an extra fee each. The fee amount has not been published yet.
Can I register a car in Sharjah for two years?
Some cars, yes. Sharjah Police has offered two-year registration since 2020 for new cars insured for two years. The National reports that from 2027 the federal rules allow it for light vehicles that were new when first registered and are no more than six years from manufacture, and owned by an individual. Approval is not automatic.
