KUWAIT CITY, Oct 18: The Kuwait Water Association has reaffirmed the importance of scientific research, innovation and international cooperation in strengthening water security and advancing Kuwait’s sustainable development goals, as it participated in an executive committee meeting in Abu Dhabi ahead of the World Utilities Congress 2027.
The association was represented by Eng. Heba Abbas, technical adviser and head of its Sustainability Committee, who also serves on the executive and technical committees of the World Utilities Congress 2027. The meeting brought together executive leaders, policymakers and international experts from the water and energy sectors to discuss strategic directions and future priorities for the global utilities industry.
Dr. Saleh Al-Muzaini, chairman of the Kuwait Water Association, said the association’s participation in specialised international forums aligns with New Kuwait Vision 2035 and the country’s efforts to strengthen water security while supporting scientific research and innovation.
He noted that the Abu Dhabi meeting was part of preparations for the next edition of the World Utilities Congress, where participants examined strategic priorities and the future direction of the global utilities sector.
Al-Muzaini also highlighted the growing international focus on water security as preparations continue for the United Nations Water Conference 2026, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in December.
He stressed the importance of maintaining Kuwait’s presence at international forums, expanding scientific cooperation and exchanging expertise to support the country’s ambitions for a more sustainable future and greater water security.
He further underscored the need to strengthen collaboration between research institutions and relevant authorities, while drawing on international expertise to develop scientific and technological solutions that improve water resource management and ensure the sustainability of supplies for future generations.
The Kuwait Water Association, he added, remains committed to supporting specialised research and promoting the exchange of knowledge at regional and international levels.
During the meeting, Abbas said rapid global changes, including technological advances, geopolitical developments and rising demand for water and energy, require a comprehensive strategic vision for the future of the utilities sector.
She emphasised that infrastructure resilience must be built into every stage of a facility’s life cycle, from planning and design to operation and further development, to ensure the continuity of essential services and their ability to withstand future challenges.
Abbas said the next phase would require closer integration between the water and energy sectors, greater use of artificial intelligence and modern technologies, and the adoption of a three-dimensional sustainability approach that balances social, environmental and economic considerations.
She stressed that the strength of infrastructure cannot be measured solely by the volume of investment or the speed at which projects are completed.
“The strength of infrastructure is measured not by the size of investments, but by the wisdom of planning and its flexibility in responding to global changes,” Abbas said, underscoring the importance of long-term resilience, security and sustainability in developing essential infrastructure.
The association’s participation highlights Kuwait’s role in international discussions on water and energy challenges and the importance of research, innovation, and cross-sector cooperation in building resilient utility systems for the future.
