The Maldives has recently announced its acceptance of RuPay cards, India’s domestic card payment network, following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. This partnership may potentially enhance the experience for Indian tourists, making it easier for them to spend while enjoying the beautiful islands.
RuPay serves as an alternative to global networks like Visa and MasterCard and has become prevalent across India, with over 700 million cards issued to date. Experts believe that allowing the use of Indian Rupees will encourage more Indian travelers to flock to the Maldives.
The timing of this announcement is significant, as it comes amidst strained diplomatic relations between the two countries. Earlier in the year, Modi promoted Lakshadweep islands on social media as an alternative to visiting the Maldives, leading to tensions. Following these events, Indian tourist numbers waned, dropping from the top spot to a lesser source market for the Maldives.
Despite these challenges, the introduction of RuPay and plans for integrating UPI—India’s widely used digital payment system—could greatly enhance spending from Indian tourists. UPI allows seamless bank-to-bank transactions through QR codes or mobile numbers, and its expansion into the Maldives is anticipated to simplify payments for travelers.
As Indian international travel continues to surge, with spending projected to rise significantly over the coming years, the trend toward digital payments is becoming increasingly important. A large majority of Indians now prefer digital payment methods, particularly UPI, for both online and in-person transactions, demonstrating a clear shift in consumer behavior that could help boost tourism in the Maldives.
