China’s Sungrow, a manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems, is considering expanding into Morocco as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Sungrow’s COO Lei Wu said recently.
Speaking at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, Lei Wu, COO of Sungrow’s Middle East and Africa division, highlighted Morocco’s potential for solar and storage projects.
He noted the importance of localization, explaining that Sungrow has expanded its footprint across the region with offices and facilities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
“We entered this market seven years ago with the largest utility-scale project at that time,” Wu said. “Since then, we have strengthened our regional strategy and continue to expand.”
Sungrow expects significant growth in the commercial and industrial (C&I) solar sector as governments and corporations push for sustainability. Rising electricity prices, energy security concerns, and self-sufficiency goals drive demand for solar solutions.
Sungrow has already surpassed 2 GW of C&I solar installations in MENA and anticipates reaching 3 GW within the next two years.
While Saudi Arabia and the UAE remain dominant market players, Wu sees Morocco among other MENA region countries as a promising frontier. He highlighted the need for policy support to ensure the profitability of rooftop PV projects.
“We are planning to build more service warehouses in some of these markets where we already operate,” Wu added. Sungrow has also made strides in energy storage, securing a 7.8 GWh battery storage deal in Saudi Arabia last year.
